I got my 95 p38 4.0 se in november. in a couple of weeks i am actually going to have a day to myself. I intend to sevice my rangey, weather permitting as will on road outside my house. Lucky i live at top of a culdisac. Obviously going do fluids, filters and plugs, but is there any bits on eas etc that would be worth doing. Also are there any difficulties doing any of it? I am planning to change the ht leads aswell, and going to go over all suspension hoses and valve blocks with leak detecor (propper stuff as im a gas engineer, not fairy liquid). Also is it realy necessary to follow the manual for jacking it up, hazard lights on with boot open? as that seems to be too much faffing about if it wouldnt cause a problem. are there any grease nipples? I have always done all my own servicing and work. Dont trust many garages, and their prices can be "excessive"

I think you need to leave the tailgate open so the suspension doesnt drop. The prop has grease nipples, not sure if they are any where else though.

Leaving a door open will stop the eas from dropping/levelling, so a must if you're under it.

Water/fairy liquid works perfect for detecting leaks, spray on all connectors and air bags (set to high) then you will see if you need to replace any bags or orings. The valve block can be overhauled with new orings and diaphragm. Compressor can also be done.

Grease nipples under the car on the prop shafts.

Diffs, transmission and transfer box all have fluids in too.

Loads to do!

Handbrake works on prop shaft not on wheels. Wedge it! Replace inlet & exhaust filters on EAS. Could dry out EAS dryer too. Drain air tank, if you don`t know when last done. Time how long to re-fill air tank. 15/20 mins good, more than 25 min bad. Check battery & earths thoroughly, as P38s are sensitive little flowers in elec dept. ( make sure you have EKA & radio codes before disconnecting battery tho!)

all of above and dont forget the pollen filters cheap but if you dont do them can be a problem with relay 7 on the fusebox under the bonnet worth checking for smell of burning

noting too stupid then. Atleast not too many nipples. My Cherokee had 17. what brake fluid is needed,is it dot4? it is a bit low, poss worn pads, will have to see. Is it worth putting a can of oil flush thru? never been to sure if they are worth it. would like to change the coolant aswell. Will refill with coolant, not water and antifreeze. Just glad that there no strange requirements. Thank you all for the advice

i would Use 50/50 water and red anti freeze. Guy in partco in Deal said blue wasnt good for alloy engines.

yup only grease nipples on propshafts, 4 or 5 can't remember, for the cost, replace all the filters... Pollen, air, fuel oil..... Look at Island 4x4 for service kits, good service promt del...

Ain`t it 6 nipples? One for each u.j. and one for slider in middle of each prop. Prop gotta rotate to access all, so ignore my preious post, don`t bother chocking wheels and if you`re quick enough....!

Why are you changing the leads? Go out at night lift bonnet and start engine. If you see a glow around them then they need changing, otherwise not. On the other hand at 15 years your coil packs may start weaken but thats a repair, not service! Presumably you are happy with your plugs? If you do change the leads buy the best you can afford and do the plugs at the same time. I have Magnacor blues in mine. There was no noticeable difference in power but certainly in smoothness it got much nicer. The leads are also guaranteed for life or rather as long as I own the car.

Got all the bits from Island 4x4. Oil, air, fuel and pollen filters. Was really shocked at how little it cost. Also got inlet filter for eas, and new set leads and plugs. Main reason doing the leads is I don't know when they last done. When do plugs may aswel do the leads. The coolant I got is GM spec red. I just happen to have a gallon. I prob will chock the wheels. I don't intend to work especially fast. Thanks for advice. But if it raining it ain't getting done.

Yup, thankfully service parts are quite reasonable for our cars :)

Re the GM antifreeze, the red/ pink stuff is OAT antifreeze I believe, this is fine but it's not overly happy mixing with old-style (usually blue) ethelyne glycol stuff. You probably have the older type of coolant in at present.
Therefore, I'd flush the system thoroughly as best you can, including the heater matrix etc to avoid problems.

Can I just drain coolant, fil with water, run it thru drain and fill with coolant? I know it sounds stupid, and makes me sound even worse, but I don't have a drive and no access to a hose at front my house, all water at back. Last time I did a drain and flush my mate had a workshop. But not anymore.

Yes that should be sufficient. Obviously a hose would be better but if it's not possible then I'd just fill and drain it out as you suggest. Don't let anything near the drain in the road though (if thats what you meant), the merest trace of antifreeze is lethal stuff and we don't want it in the domestic water system!

Oh god no. Going have the full spill kit out just incase. Plus I don't wanna. Be laying on road in a puddle of antifreeze. What oil would you reccomend?

Well I wouldn't go quite that far lol, just don't pour anything nasty places where it shouldn't be!
Semi-synthetic 10w 40 is absolutely fine, I have fully-synth in mine but only because I can get hold of it cheaply.

it may be expensive but its worth changing oil in auto box and also use fully synthetic oil in the engine as it lasts twice as long as any other oil

The company supplys spill kits, so may aswell make use of them, plus something warmer to lay on. lol. I will go into what ever supplier i pass at work and get oil from them. Either partco or another place i like. The box oil, and filter will be done by a friend of mine, dont fancy doing that on road outside my house. Cheers for all the help
