Hi,
Just collected my 2005 110 from a local garage after a full service and was wondering how the cost compares to others.

Oil filter TD5 (centrifugal)
Fuel filter TD5
Oil 5w30, 8 ltr
TQF transmission oil, 0.5 ltr
Gear oil EP 90, 4.5 ltr
Air filter TD5
Oil filter TD5
Service/labour, 4 hours
Total £340

They appear to be well rated locally and are all easy to deal with so I would like to use them again, as long as the above is a fair price. What do you think?

They also said that they had checked through everything else and noticed that it needs a track rod end plus both rear radius arm bushes. It makes a nice change to turn up and find the work had not been done automatically...

about 100 for the parts and oils if you were to buy yourself.

so 60quid an hour lab.

not sure why it's 4 hours

Did they use genuine parts?

I'd say 4 hours is a bit excessive for a properly set up garage. I can do that in 2 hours in my garage and that's rolling about on my back and I could have dumped all the gear oil and replaced the lot in that time, looks like he just topped up the main box.
 
Thanks gents, the bill was £285 plus Vat.

Service/labour came to £150 in total and was detailed at £37.50 p/h. He said that they had been right through everything and checked the whole van out so maybe that was an hour or so?

Not sure whether they used genuine parts or not to be honest.

OK, so it was £285, that's OK. Couple of things to point out....
Firstly garages,(If not 100% LR indy) often don't use genuine parts,they just order from their local factor.This can be more expensive than genuine parts from a main dealer in some cases.A decent LR indy will usually state genuine,OEM or pattern parts.(Or use only what you request)
Remember garages are there to earn a living,that does mean charging more than they pay for parts,the internet now means everyone knows what everyone else pays for parts,a few still charge like a wounded bull,but most are very aware of prices.
Garages also have to pay rent/mortgage,rates wages,insurance,tools etc,etc. We are also constantly being stiffed for software upgrades and technical info,have a look at the LR topix website for subscription costs as a small example.£37.50 is too cheap for most garages who are trying to remain recent in terms of keeping up with recent models.
If you asked the garage to have a good look around your truck as a first view,esp if you intend keeping it and using them,chances are they went that bit further than the letter of the service spec sheet - keeping themselves and most importantly you covered.If you are happy with the work carried out and have a feeling that they did the job properly,keep using them,cost is not everything....

All they seem to have done is an oil change and top-up, so what stopped you from doing it?

I'm happy enough with the garage, the owner and the mechanics. Thought the price was ok too but just wondered how it compared to others. Will probably go back to have the track rod end done along with the rear radius arm bushes...
 
Serviced my 02 d2 two weeks ago using fully synthetic engine oil and all correct oils for gear boxes all filters excluding air (which is one that can be cleaned if req) and changed brake fluid (which I had in stock) total cost £93-88p. 4hours work, but kept stopping for tea. 6 days later M.O.t time , no problems.:D:D:D
 
I'm not a mechanical type person but I can service my Defender and do all the jobs your garage appears to have done. Parts I would get from Paddock, they are not expensive. Part of the fun of owning a Defender is to do the work yourself. Then you know what has been done. Just come back from a 7000 kilometer trip around Morocco , most of the time spent getting lost in the Sahara and my 24 year old Defender never missed a beat> Just given it another service and it's ready to go round again.
 
I'm not worried about doing the servicing but I would rather put it through the books as it's a company vehicle. It's more expensive but I'm worth it :)
