I put some old foam camping mat under the foot mats, which helped a little, then solved the engine noise issue by fitting a bloody great speaker box in the rear........

i just kept all the carpet and sound proofing from my donar disco and cut it to fit the 110, to me it sounds hugely different.

I spoke to them a while back and they sell all different thicknesses of sound absorbing foams, from 40-50mm stuff for the roof, down to 6-8mm for the floor, doors etc. Obviously, use the thickest material you can, for each area of the car, and I'd also be tempted to add mass to the flat panels, like the floor, side panels etc, using flashing, like everybody else has suggested.

Some great suggestions, but..
Before you fit any soundproofing - reduce some of the noise sources, one of the first things to do is make sure there aren't any holes in the bulkhead that will let engine noise directly through into the cab! Often there are holes where previous owners have done modifications or grommits are missing behind the dash/ fuseboard etc.
The biggest improvement I made on my 200 tdi 90 was to fit a Discovery transfer box - hence lower engine speed - reducing the dominant noise source.
Anything else you can do to reduce the sources of the noise will really help (such as replacing a mechanical fan for electric, or fixing the blowing exhaust, nobbly tyres etc).

I used noisekiller and put it everywhere and that works a treat, definately expensive but I thought it was worth it. I used it under the bonnet, on the bulkhead. Removed the rooflining and fitted it in there too, I will also do inside the doors too. I also have exmoor trim front mat that covers the gearbox tunnel, and that was expensive.

All - on my 1987 Def 110 I have done the following:
1. Bulkhead, seatbox, gear tunnel front & 2nd row footwell + behind dashboard, all load area: Autoleads sticky sound deadening from Halfords (you car will look like the interior of a seventies russian space ship)
2. On top of it everywhere - NOiseKiller kits for bulkhead, footwell, 2nd row and load area
3. On top of front seats footwell, gear tunnel, load area: U-PM heavy duty sound deadening
4. Engine bay: NOisekiller kit + LR sound deadening on Bonnet + Autoleads on external sides of bulkead + wheel arches
5. Front wheel under arches & engine tray: original LR optional sound deadening (from Def 110 Countyoptions list, all eBay cheap!)
6. Changed tyres to standard Generals & Disco 1:1.222 box.
7: Roof interior: currently only autoleads, but will add egg box from Noisekiller in addition to the standard trim.
I regularly travel between London and Italy - at least 2 - 3 times / year, makes a lot of difference, still not an elextric Lexus in terms of noise but hey I can listen to clasiscal music whilst cruising at 70 - 75 MPH, so all great

+1 for second skin, the spectrum, is superb & can be sprayed on through an underseal gun too,
The spectrum sludge is ALOT thicker and needs troweling on and spreading, Both dry after a few days to a substance not unlike bed liner paint, very tough but denser with great acoustic properties, used a couple of gallons of it on a friends toy**a and worked a treat...planning on covering bulkhead and inside seat box on my 90 where traditional matting is almost imposible to cut to shape neatly
