serious pulsing vibration and throttle stick when over 60 defender td5 please help!

Hi all,

I just had a long journey in my defender with a disco transfer box. I'm used to easily staying at 80 ish on motorways but had terrible problems today going any speed over 50.

The car starts go have terrible crunching vibrations that seem to be related to turbo/engine speed. They can be heard and felt through the gear stick. Even when I take my foot off the pedal the engine noise does not stop. Pressed the clutch and rather than the engine just idling the rpm increased as if I was pressing the pedal. Almost like the turbo is pumping air in when engine is idle.


What would the symptoms be if it was a failed turbo?

It doesn't feelike anything to do with steering or prop shafts (had them replaced before so know what it feels like)

Turbo failure usualy involves lots of smoke and rapid consumption of your engines oil !! Bearings fail and let oil feed get sucked into inlet manifold ! Take off a hose on turbo ,wriggle the pretty impeller and check for any movement and free rotation ! Any movement or roughness means new turbo!!!
You say you checked your propshaft uj joints !! Sometimes they can be hard to test ! Best way is to unbolt one end of prop and wriggle joints to see if any wear or loose parts are present !!
Worth a look ! Next while you have the propshaft off check for unusual movement at diff input flange , jack up a wheel and turn diff , check for smooth operation !! May be broken or worn diff !!!

lots of things can cause vibrations, although you say they've just been done, get under the car and check prop uj's, also dual mass flywheel can cause bad vibrations when its failing, sometimes when revs dont drop when dipping clutch pedal it can be the clutch sensor located on the fluid reservior, does the car swith off with the key and is your oil level at its normal level
 
Assuming the disco box is fitted to either a 200 or 300 there is no dual mass flywheel !! Just a big heavy one piece flywheel with a spigot bearing in the centre ! I think !!
Could be a td5 I suppose !! Then you may be correct !!!

Thanks for your quick replies - ill have a look at the turbo asap.

My rear uj was worn and this produced different uniform vibrations throughout the whole car when accelerating under 30 Or at speeds over 30. This is a completely different feeling as think its the engine and transmission that's shaking here.

Could be the flywheel but I haven't been able to re-create the problem at lower speeds... It only comes on above 60 which is anoyong for the odd motorway journeys. It's more of a really irregular engine noise. Worried to try and push it!

and suposidly hhave to do a 100 mile journey tomorrow!

Just got home after 100 miles on M40 at 45mph.....

what would the symptoms be of dual mass flywheel failure? Was thinking this could explain the vabration and crunching being heard and felt through the gear stick even when clutch pedal depressed!

It was replaced with a brand new one by previous owner september 2011 - Surely it cant be failing this quickly??...

i had the dual mass go on my corsa it creates massive heavy vibration and depressing the clutch makes no difference

when they go properly they throw the engine crank out of balance hence the massive deep vibration

it can feel like the engine is surging
 
dual mass shouldnt affect your speed to much though, is it top revs in all gears or just when up to speed? does it get worse the faster you go or is it constant all the time?

How?

A dual mass/flywheel bearing or any other transmission fault shouldn't drop your top end off, it may give you massive vibrations and may stop you wanting to go faster but it shouldn't affect engine power.

A sign of the dual mass going is vibration mainly through the clutch pedal as its pulses the clutch slave. You will also find gear changes develop a knock as the undamped flywheel plates goes from one extreme to the other.

If its developing vibration through the accelerator and transmission and it is engine speed related to me it sounds like you may have dropped an injector. A leak back test would be my first port of call, see if one of the injectors is failing to supply pressure at full load. Word of warning here, DO NOT undo the injector pipes to check the injectors, bear in mind a TD5 is a PD engine and uses incredibly high nozzle pressure (1500BAR on a TD5 injector), it can have the affect of a water jet cutter and slice things in half, get a proper leak back test kit or take to a deisel specialist.

You cant crack off a td5 injector pipe, there fuel supply reaches them through the head without pipes, but you can do a cylinder balance test using a diagnostic to check if injectors are working

I was wondering that as they aren't common rail (my experience with TD5's is I have seen one, thats about it, im going with my PD experience here), definitley worth testing though as its a common cause of lack of power and will give a vibration due to misbalance of the firing order....
 
Dual mass flywheel went on mine and sounded like a bag of spanners though transmission/stick - really bad 55mph up to 60 ish then sort of eased off if you could 'tease' it through.....

Ran it on the drive with transfer box in neutral and main box driving and reproduced bag of spanners effect. I really thought it was something disintegrated in the box itself, but LR garage (independent) was quite (correctly) confident it was flywheel.

Prop uj's have gone too of course at times (front very recently) but tended to be more like driving over heavily ridged tarmac as well as the vibes through the transmission......?

Maybe its both - the uj's are the easiest/cheapest starting point? Oh, and if you are doing that, do get one of those luverly 'wine'glass' 9/16 sockets/extensions - saves hours of fiddling nuts (!) one face at a time and skinned knuckles....

(don't know how this relates to revs picking up on their own though......)

hi again ,

So on the way back to london I went at 40mph any faster and had serious engine vibration and grating noise started again.

went to a garage who took it for a road test and as they accelerated past 40 the noise came again with serious black smoke.

They checked the oil and there was about 5L too much!

I filled it myself a few months ago and it was dead on!

Really not sure whats going on here

does anyone have any ideas?


Bought the car from a seller 6 months ago who said it was 'perfect condition' and now this! (even though i've somehow managed to get quite attached to it)
