What are peoples thoughts on a 19j in a series with series running gear.

Do they have enough power and whats fuel economy like?
As in a defender they aren't the best.

Ok thanks. And only as i have a 19j sitting around and would like a series as a project

Would like to put a tdi in but they can be expensive and dont wont to spend if i dont have to.

a 19j should have ample power for an 88" or even a 109, it'll not give you stellar performance though

i drove an old 90 (only the second i've ever driven) with 19j a couple of weeks ago for 7 or 8 miles from a cold start up to full running temperature, this included town traffic and about 5 or 6 miles of M6 in the 50mph limited section, it kept up with all traffic nicely and was a pleasant sounding engine at 50mph, remember a 90 is permanent 4x4 so sucks more power out of the engine so potentially in an 88" it should be more responsive

would i fit a 19j in one of my Series, yes without a doubt as 99% of the ones that were unreliable have now gone to make baked bean cans, the only thing that would stop me ...

is the 200tdi's that i already have under the bonnets :D

+1 and remember an 88 is considerably lighter than a 90. The only word of caution I'd have is the 19J doesn't like being over-revved which can be tempting when you can almost keep up with the general flow of traffic.

An overdrive would help though a good one will set you back as much as an engine  Put 7.50's on at least

My 90's going for mot today, with my freshly restored 19j

I've never driven it cause it was in a ****e state when I got it

I will let you know how it gets on!

Ive driven a 90 with 19j and was terrible compared to my 200 but i think it will work well in a series as it is lighter as said and is geared better for low power
And a good point with the 19j is its a smoother engine i find.

I had one is mine and it was fine. Pulled well and easy to maintain although I did have problems with the injector pump. I haven't the faintest about mpg but I don't remember it being terrible. The 200 is good conversion and when the big end went on the 19J that is what I replaced it with. There is more power but other wise not much difference.
