A bit sarf of Dorking
I'm mid-refurb of my Lightweight's dash panel, and have achieved a bit of a miracle in cleaning out the cable so that it actually turns. My problem now is that I can't get it to re-engage (its square hole) with the shaft. It goes in about half way, but that's it. Not far enough to get the outer into its hole in the speedo casing.

I've got a feeling that it came out easily enough, can't remember, but if that's wrong, is it that the plastic inner has hardened over the years and just needs insane force to get the square lump on the shaft to go all the way in? Might try some vaseline?

Is it seated properly at the lower end ?

If above does not work try putting a small drill bit in the hole and rotate between the fingers to remove any crud that may be inside. Had this problem once and the remains of an insect came out.o_O

Tried that, no wildlife! Having had a measure I'm pretty sure I'm missing a bit.

It's the trip 'cable' that has the weird end that you can't turn on the dashboard - resets the trip meter.

Ah ... in that case have a read of the 'for info' link I posted it shows the insides of the gauge and might help you visualise if there is a problem and where it might lurk ...

I now see that there's a bit snapped off and missing from my cable. Not lost by me. I now remember that the cable just slipped out before I even thought about removing it. New cable £48, uh uh, seemed to work fine as it was, so a grommet to keep dust out and a cable tie to hold it in will be fine.
