my series 3 diesel keeps dying. fuel filter seems to get blocked with a grey jelly, sometimes runs well then again today dies and struggles to get home. emptying fuel filter whilst running produces no gunge. takes forever to bleed it. what do you think causes it?
is it water, is it fungus? if water how can it get in?
if fungus , what to do?
someone suggested add a bit of petrol to the fuel this cold weather. has anyone else done this?

yours miffed, cider to deliver as well!

I suggest you add at least 1 part petrol to ten of diesel, and see if that helps.

It may be waxing in cold conditions, or a water-fuel emulsion. Hard to say without seeing it.

If it is waxing this suggests cheapo fuel of a lousy grade, but adding some petrol should help it quite a lot.

id drain the tank asap . then blled all the **** out the system , then rplace filter and fill with nefuel

That is very good advice.
If the drain plug is easy to shift .... but mind you don't rip a big hole in the bottom of the tank trying to shift it.

Gunge in tanks is a bummer to clean out.

you can buy a 'kit' of stuff that cleans the tank, derusts the inside and recoats the inside. i used it when some kind soul put sand in me tank, its easy to use but of course you have to drain the fuel and remove the tank before you can use it.

can't remember how much its was but you can get it from a company called eastwood or aeastwick restorations or summin like that.

found it... Car Tank Repair Kit (S208) - Frost Auto Restoration Techniques

Well for one think its pink!!!
for another thing the tank is probably mashed up as to the amount of times that you have crashed it or 'forgotten' to put the handbrake on!
It has been rendered!! (although this may be due to a silly boy with a drill and bucket of mortar!)
