Hi does anyone know what the approx weight of a 2.25 petrol Series III cylinder head is?

I have to book a courier in to collect one...

I'd imagine it's a bit heavier than you'd want to remove from an engine bay on your own, but not so heavy that you'd need a friend to come and help.

Depending on age, that could be in pounds or kilos.
 
I haven't weighed one, but I have lugged one around the garage, I reckon it to be about 20kgs with the rocker shaft and valves.

I suppose you need to google engine machine shops in your area. If your head has not yet been converted to unleaded petrol, you could get that done at the same time . Alternatively speak to Turners who do heads for old landies.

I can weigh my series 2a diesel head for you if you want but it might be a bit beefier than the namby pamby petrol heads...
 
Getting the head skimmed is simple enough, the machine shops who do this will know the skim to get the compression as these are common engines. But its getting pricy, I got a price last week for a flywheel skim, was expecting £20-30 but quotes were £100 - 120. I think there are so few places doing this work they can name their price, the in the past you could shop around. An exchange head could be another option.

Wow that is pricey. I was also expecting prices under £50. I've asked for a few quotes and one company has come back needing more info though:

We would need to have one of the higher compression heads to measure the combustion chamber.
Failing that, you would need to tell me what combustion chamber cc you require.

Does anyone know the exact figures or spec I need to give them? I'd be taking the new head down to them in my land rover as it is my only car, so I can't give them the head that is currently on to measure as I need that to drive!!
 
Re combustion cc, they should know but if not then you plug the plug hole, both valves shut and pour some parrafin / oil in and measure the volume. Calculate this against the swept volume (engine capacity) for one cylinder and you should get 7:1. Imporant to check in case it not that already. Then work out what volume you need for 8:1. problem comes if there is a swish band as you have to measure the plan area then calulate how much to come off. Use squared paper and trace round it then count squares. No one said this was fun! But this is why I'm a bit worried that they have asked. A Series specialist aught to know the head thicknesses for the various comp ratios.
 
Alternatively, ring Turners and ask them the dimensions of an 8.1 head, also ask them for a price of a recon, it might end up cheaper.

Having done some basic calcs, as I've been thinking about head skimming on my 109, for 7:1, the total clearance volume should be 95.2 cc, and for 8:1, 81.6cc.

The total clearance volume should include any clearance between the top of the piston and the deck of the block at TDC, and the volume enclosed by the clamped cylinder head gasket.

I can believe that to go from a 7:1 head to an 8:1 compression ratio would need about 100 thou taking off (this implies the bath tub takes about 83% of the bore area), but, I struggle to believe the quoted figure;

Umm your figures don't sound right to me.

Err actually - plugging some numbers into the eq above I get similar figures to you!

b = 90.47mm
s = 88mm

According to the green book (4 cylinder petrol engine specifications)
 
Yes, but I seem to recall the combustion chambers are a lot less cross section than the bore so the volume and CR will be correct but the amount to come off will be a lot less.
