Ive just purchased a series IIa diesel landrover, it has been stood parked up for three years, now im no mechanic but im keen to learn and put this old girl back on the road.

It is listed as a 1964, where it was used by the MOD, short wheel base. It was the registered in 1974 thus has had 2 owners prior to me.

I have registered it as SORN to do work on it. I put £10 worth of diesel in, put in a brand new battery and turned the key...... she seems to want to start and turns over but thats it. The clutch peddle is all play and the gears change without it. Ive been told the clutch plate is stuck.

So simply I have a lovely restoration project though I appreciate the chasis has proberly got more patches than any quilt Ive ever seen but generally it seems in good nick.
I need advice on how I can make this historic vehicle fire up again. What should I be doing to get it working?

Replace all filters & blow all fuel lines with an airline Drain fuel tank and refuel. ya £10 is now blown Then Purge the fuel system & try again. also check glow plugs are getting hot. once it's running start it up chuck into gear and drive it around a field then stamp on brakes to try and release clutch.

It'll be tax exempt anorl. :D :D

Old landy diesels can be a bitch to start if you don't know the score with em. Stick some new heater plugs in, do all the fuel stuff redhand says, make sure the battery is good, Give it a good 30 seconds on the heater plugs, more if it's cold, then dip the clutch and hit the starter and keep cranking till it fires. Don't touch the accelerator pedal till it fires.

as long as you are mechaniclly minded then a landy is easy to work on
i rebuilt my first at 17 ok i was training as a mechanic but i did a total nut and bolt rebuild and she came out ok

i wouldnt worry to much about the chassis being rotton as most of the militry units have half an inch of underseal on them so should last forever
those old desiels are a pig to start anyway follow the other guys advice and you wont go wrong once its started strip the whole thing down to nothing and start from scratch, total rebuild, it will make it so much easeir to sort and very satifying once finish

good luck
