How do I positively identify the Gearbox / transfer box in my Series?

I am of the opinion that it is a 11A box due to the lack of syncro between 1st and 2nd, but I am more than willing to admit that this could simply be because the syncro (like the rest of the box) is worn out! It is really noisy, clunky and leaks like a seive! There are nasty clicking noises even at idle, and would love to find a decent recon replacement.

This box is really letting down the vehicle in terms of drivability. Running the V8, I always assumed that whoever did the engine swap used the supposedly stronger 11A unit - and would like to replace like for like. But i'm not sure. What else would fit? I assume that there is some sort of adaptor already installed to link to the V8? I'm planning on performing the swap myself, so would like to avoid any nasty surprises! Any advice welcome!

Easiest visual external difference between S3 and S2 boxes is the position of the clutch slave cylinder. The S2 had the slave vertical and up near the clutch pedal, the S3 is horzontial and on the opposite side.

Yes there will be an adaptor plate between the gearbox and engine. The V8 flywheel will also have been redrilled to take the Series clutch.

Thanks Andy - I will go and have a crawl around in my oil puddle and have a look at the slave!

No need to crawl underneath. The Seies II cylinder is mediately below the master cylinder on the same side (assuming RHD) whilst the pipe on the Series III will go across the top of the flywheel housing.

Odd. From what you say (thanks, by the way) I have an S111 box - I guess my syncro is truly shafted! V8 power must be too much for it? What recomndations for a stronger replacement?

edit

I have just been for a crawl, and the slave (unless I am very much mistaken, and I am fairly drunk right now!) is low on the offside of the box in a vertical position.

Thanks.

I guess a decent S11a box in good nick is harder to come by than a S111. Best I start searching!
