Series diesel oil filter

I have a series3 with a 2 1/4 diesel. I have just put a new element into the oil filter done it up tight and it leaks, not just a drip, it literally P's out even without the engine running. I think I fitted it properly, rotating the bowl until it nipped up then tightened it.
If any helpful sole has any tips to prevent this problem I would be really pleased to hear them.

did ya fit a new o ring anurl an gi it a smear of oil before ya purrit back together?

Thanks for your replies, yes I did remove the old o ring. I didnt smear the new one with oil though. I will put some oil on it when I re do it, any other suggestions? How tight should I do up the bolt?

you may have over tightened it.
