I am wondering as I have a disco 1 that is rotting but engine and axles and gearbox/ transfer box are okay i think maybe 2 years time my disco body will fail mot floor sills inner wings etc rather repeair that I might opt to buy a brand new galvanised chassis defender and nput all the axles engine gearbox and transferbox from disco onto that chassis.

my question is the series 3 or 2 body same size and will fit on to a defender chassis ? any tips or warnings please tell me. I want it to be so simple no electrics or rubbish just pure simple 4x4 vechile that I can get very dirty and pressure wash inside and outside !! I will customise a dashboard from stainless steel etc and put switches onj that form lights, wipers, etc

Series 2 and 3 are very similar to one another - many S2's are sporting S3 bits and pieces, ranging from wings, to whole front ends, doors, tubs, etc. But I'm not sure if that's what your question was.

Series and Defenders are different - not massively so, but it's a lot of fiddling about to make it fit. There are always Series/Defender hybrids on fleaBay so plenty of people do it.

What's the attraction of Series bodywork for your project vehicle? If it's going to be a toy - I'd have thought minimal bodywork, a tray-back, etc. was the way to go.

yes tray back but I would like the option to take the roof and side panels off and be like a jeep etc

In that respect there is no difference, they are just as unboltable as each other. You will find defender panels (especially doors) much more expensive though. If its just as a muckabout toy some old series 3 panels would seem to be what you want. The wheelbase won't match for a disco though, so you will have to either extend or shorten a rear tub if you have a 100" chassis.
Don't forget that you CANNOT use the series ID on the vehicle if you use the disco chassis, suspension and running gear.

my plan was is to buy an galvanised new defender 90 chassis and stick the disco 200 engine and gearbox and axles on to it and then bung an td5 bulkhead and then series 3 body for the rest and then simple electric for lights ingition, etc custom build dashboard or second hadone from defender scrappy etc this will be my dialy drive as well greenlaning and etc i understand it might have q plate but that don't matter it thispossbile ?

Yes but you will need to modify the rear tub a bit to fit, and yes it would need an SVA test and would end up on a Q reg. Probably easier to buy a 90 tub. You would also need wheelarch spats front and rear as the disco axles would be wider then a series bodywork.

yep were putting wheel arch spats etc rights are the props same size disco or use defender type fuel tank ?? just wanna know how much of disco i can use in a defender chassis etc

Disco chassis wheelbase is 100", Defender 90 is...90" so no the props will need to be made/bought to fit. The front *might* fit but I can't say for sure.

yes iknow it is 100 and defender is 90 I have a friend who have a metal lathe so can make the disco prop shorter etc I know the disco gearbox is different to the defender gearbox but how much futher back it is if i put disco gearbox on I can make a custom tunnel to accomate the gearbox sticks etc if it is say up to 15 inch further back i can accept that handbrake same location ?? i have not really looked at defender inside etcI have no knowledge of defender layout etc

No it aint. A 110 is, in fact, 110 inches from the middle of each wheel but a 90 isn't 90 inches. They're 92.9 if I remember correctly but however long they are, they aint 90.

I know. :) It was a roundabout way of saying the 100" parts won't fit. And you are right its 92.9" :darth_vader:

Don't quote me on it, excuse the pun :D

But yes they were 92.9 inches when they were the 90.
When they became known as the defender they remained at this size until about the year 2000, when they became 93 inches.
