just got a 1982 series 3 swb, would like to put a set of steel modulars with all terrain tyres on it, any idea's on how wide i can go, what size wheels and tyres, and where the best deals are, its had a 2.4 ford transit diesel engine installed and a 1.5 ton front axel, (i think thats what he said?)

235/70r16 plus tyres for £365.00
the tyres are ok depending on how much mileage and how much mud you envisage

also do 20" alloys - don't think you'll get them on a Series 3 though

If you are going green laning I would recommend getting the tallest tyres that will fit under the wheel arches, to give good ground clearance. The tallest tyres that will fit without modifications are 750 x 16. The 235 85 R16 are about the same height and a bit wider, so they would be O.K. on Standard LWB rims. I imagine that the wider 265 75 R16 would fit, but I have never tried them.

Thanks, i got a set of mud tyres on standard series rims for greenlane/offroading already on me landy i was looking for a set i can use everyday. now i have got an idea what size its time to ring around, cheers!

If you fitted a set of 16" modulars with a fairly agressive patterned A/Ts in 235/85 you'd probably find the extra height gave you an advantage over the mud pattern standard size wheel/tyres you have on there.

I doubt you'd then find yourself changing back & forth depending on what you were planning to drive on (Does anyone do that? ). The higher A/Ts would do all you wanted. ;)

ive got a 72 series 3 with 235/85 r16 a/t tyres on wolf rims they give me better ground clearance if you get a good make of A/T tyres they will get you most places mud tyres will get you

Having tried on 9.00 x 16 yesterday, I've decided they're the way to go. I recon they'll fit with just a small trim to the front wings. They look great.

So am I right in saying that 235X85X16 will fit on standard rims without any modifications etc needed?

I am now looking at getting new tyres myself and would like something a bit beefy, but not OTT.

heres a pic of mine with 235/85/r16 a/t bf goodrich tyres on wlof rims

Yeah BFs jsut seem very expensive! You do see a lot of people using them (particularily on sand-based expeditions which I will be doing!). Having never used them I have no idea what they are like though!

I was thinking Insa Turbo as they seem reasonablly priced?

I like the look of the Insa Turbos too. I wonder how good they are compared to the BF mud tyres (insa turbo special track - they look very grippy). Not too bothered about on road grip as i drive it dead slow but i guess the more the merrier!

Have i read the above correctly...235/85/16's will go onto standard landrover 7.5 x 16 rims?
