series 3 what oils?

Just bought a 1982, 88 series 3 with a ford transit 2500cc diesel engine,
i want to give her a complete oil change can anyone recommend what grade of:
engine oil,
gearbox oil
axel oils i should use,

EP 80/90 to GL4 in g/box, tranny & diffs (though it can be GL5 in your diffs). One shot grease seems to be fave for your front swiv's & whatever Ford recommend for your injun (or whatever is cheapest - same as everyone else does on here).

Nigh on impossible without taking the front panel orf. Even small children cun't git their hands in there.

what ever you put in as it'll only end up all over your drive/road/garden anyways......

Thanks men, just had a look at the steering relay, i know a guynacologist who mite be able to do the job!

I was quite envious of my mate who is a gynaecologist

He decorated his hallway through his letterbox. (sorry)

I have topped up my steering box but I didn't know that you had to top up your steering relay. In fact I can't quite figure what the relay does?
Can anyone enlighten me?

if yer rig up hose and funnel type arrangement, bit like a medical drip, yer should be able to get the oil in anywhere! yer dont see nurses turning up with a funnel and a drum of blood ter top u up!

How much do you lot pay for oil??

I just got stung £50 for 2 gallons of shell "for high milage vehicles" stuff! (last time I send the other half to buy oil for me!)

Costco does a 20Ltr tub of Chevron engine oil for around £23

I was told by some old bloke (who almost had Land Rover tatooed on his forehead) to use a straight 40 in the engin and EP90 in everywhere else. When i mentioned one shott grease he looked at me as if i had come from mars!! what do you guys think?

I use EP90 in my swivs, but a lot of folks rate one shot. Either'll do the job.

if yer've gorra LT77 g/box, yer dunt wanna be usin EP90 in it!

About filling the steering relay.....Take out two of the small bolts on the top of the relay. One is used for filling and the other for releasing air bubbles. I have always got by with a syringe without a needle. Can be bought at chemists. The one I use for that job is about 20mm diameter.

I've got a Transit 2.5 Di engine in mine too! - and I've got a Transit Haynes manual(1986 to 1999). Here's the spec for the engine oil:

Multigrade engine oil, viscosity SAE 10W/30 to API SH/CD, ACEA A2-96 and B2-96, or to ACEA A3-96 and B3-96
(Duckhams QXR Pemium Diesel Engine Oil, or Duckhams Hypergrade Diesel Engine Oil)

The service interval for an oil and filter change is 10,000 miles.

Be careful to put the correct ammount of oil into it beacause in the Transit, the engine is canted over about 20 degrees, but with my Milner conversion the engine is almost upright. This means that unless the dipstic has been remarked it will give a false reading. What I did with mine was to put the Land-Rover on level ground, measure out the correct quantity of oil, put it in, then remark the dipstick. I would also advise that you check that the front diff does not hit the engine when the front suspension has been fully compressed - I had to saw a bit off the front oil seal housing on the engine. I also had a problem with the front propshaft fouling the conversion plate - so a bit had to be cut off that too.

It's well worth the struggle of putting some oil in the steering relay - it improved the accuracy of the steering no end. It took me about an hour with a syringe.

5W-30 or 10w-30 in the transit engine (depending on how nice you wanna be)
80W-90 in the diffs and the gearbox and transfer box
