Some more recent crossmembers have the tab fitted the defender way, avoiding the need for a spacer.

Try GDI Products on eBay, they've a lot of galv stuff, series spacers and drop plates.

This is how mine is fitted. I have a couple of large, thick washers behind the bottom bolts.

My curiosity was nudged on this topic. I was thinking about getting a small trailer for stuff like tip runs, logs and a sort of community wheel barrow. After a bit of poking about, tracing the wiring and checking over potential switch location and wotnot I came up with phase one of the project…………. I need a new rear cross member!!!!!! Bugger.

It was already getting pretty grim before that discovery. The fuel tank front outrigger is hanging in there so that’s booked in, ( end of September for chrissakes), which includes two wheel bearings and the rear hub seals.
Were she being tested the fail/advisory list is quite worrying but the words “in due course” for the pedal box and footwell repairs and the shock absorbers has helped me write my Christmas list really really early.
Next year the steering rods and idler/joints area were on the list but a rear propshaft replacement might edge it. Also I feel I could give that go as I did the front a couple of years ago helped by being to park up on a high kerb, loads of scrambling room but there was still blood loss and a nasty bump.
She is not only starting to cost a bit but the timeline for getting her booked in is weeks ahead so we could be facing a year of almost constant repairs and replacements…………….. and yet we purred round the bye pass this afternoon, windows out for air con, a gentle breeze on my knee thanks to the new hole and a couple of Landry waves.
Btw. The workshop I collected her from yesterday had a new landrover in.Awful shape,colour and wheels but I had to smirk at the two and a half grand for a headlight replacement.

Probably had to remove most the front end to replace the headlamp!

There was a pile of plastic mouldings of all shapes and sizes that had to be taken off but I think the main thing was the expense of the unit. I went to this place again yesterday to sort some dates out for the outrigger in front of the fuel tank. There was another new ‘one’ parked up. Air con unit kaput whilst aimlessly wandering around the south of Brittany. It will cost about the same apparently. I suppose there might be warranty issues to resolve but the techie chap was appalled by the workmanship…….. or is it robotship.
Those extinction rebellion wannabes targeted my landie last year by letting all my tyres down and plastering her with posters about gas guzzling, pollution spewing road monsters. I did put them right but they should take a look at all really naff bits of plastic under the hood of these new monstrosities.
