Hi, as it is 2 years 9 months since I lost the keeys to my S 3 SWB, and pressure is mounting from SWMBO to sort it out, How easy is it to change the barrel?

I didn't think you could change the barrel. I thought you had to change the whole mechanism. Mind you, that's not really that difficult.

Disconnect the choke cable at the carb (or stop cable if it's diesel) then take off the steering column shroud. The lock is held on by two bolts. If they have been fitted properly the heads will have been sheared off. (Most that I've experienced haven't). If they have been sheared you'll need to drill them out or tap them round with a punch.

Refitting is the reverse of removal but use new bolts - they don't need to be the shear type.

It would behoove you to note the route of the choke/stop cable so that you can put the replacement back in.

I hope this helps.

I had to change mine when I first got it. It was the type with the steering lock. It was much easier than I thought it was going to be but it is a bit fiddly cos there ain't much room for big hands. My choke knob is mounted on the dash so that made it a bit easier. The only slight issue is that the plastic shroud now has a buzzy rattle when on tickover. Shop around for the the new barel. They seem to be around £75-£80 but I found a new old stock one for £35. I wish I'd bought two.

Have you actually sourced a new barrel to fit in it?
I was under the impression that with a key fitted there was a pin to push in to allow removal of barrel.
If you have drilled the barrel centre out what can you see down the hole?

Can you post a picture of the key type? From that we can work out the barrel type. Once you get the barrel you can see where the pin is. If you can't turn the barrel to line up with the hole for pushing the pin back then you may have to drill a small hole and push it back where it is. This is a standard FS lock barrel and its probably one of these. You need to push the little brass pin in but it only lines up if you turn it on (to make sure you have the key). So if you can rotate it you can drill where the pin is and push it back. Another way is to to force a screwdriver inot the lock and with a spanner on the driver force it into the on postion, this bends the tumblers so you need a new barrel but its not a huge issue.
