Here's an update about cleaning up blocks:-

Engine Block De Rust In Molasses Bath. ? Lotus Elan Blog.

It appears that the feed grade molasses may be important - cleaned up "black treacle" from Tesco may not be the thing.

Was told to take molasses with boiling water for a foot injury once! Did the trick ha ha good luck!

Possibly just filling the cooling system with the molasses solution then flushing it all out?

If t'was I, I would do exactly that, making sure it gets agitated every day or two. I stress that I haven't tried this myself! From reading others experience online, seems to be an exercise in patience and persistence.
