series 3 practical

ive seen a nice series 3 i like anyone know if there any good as a day to day vehicle id want to go 25 miles twice a day or the wife would use it fer shopping etc
anyone any idea if there practical driven them in the army but never owned a series always 90s and defenders

i had a nice petrol one that were quite practical but it required looking after to keep in running well (oiling, greasing odd wee new part here and there) but eventually i broke the engine so.....

....then i got a doosil one which is very practical for paintin me drive with oil stains, constantly braking down places and doing less mpg than a petrol v8 while towing....

.......but there're great fun, i've still got them even though i now drive a toyota hilux.. ssshhh dont tell anyone

not quite what i wanted to here been looking at a series 3 deisel which i would maintain on weekends myself
have another car for getting to work but thought id use it 2 0r 3 days a week if possable its a very late series
what are the early eighties ones like in particular
ive driven a td5 that work maintained for the last 5 years

Slow, uncomfortable, noisy, cold, thirsty and probably about to fall to bits but apart from that quite ok. My 110 is my everyday drive and it feels like a range rover after a couple of hours in a series.

my petrol one is an '81 with a galvanised chassis, it had been well looked after and tarted up nice, i really liked it when it went, was a bit dubious on the handling front but ran well and never failed to get me home.

the diesel has a perkins 4203 engine rather than the standard landrover engine, its an 83 model on a heavily patched and now cracked chassis, it leaks oil to the outside and water and smoke to the inside, its rediculously loud, looks scabby and has tried to get me stranded numerous times although its that simple an engine even i managed to get it going again and get home! i still really like it, its great fun to drive but using it everyday is tiring as ****!!!

if you were to find a real good un and really looked after it (i thrashed the petrol one too hard) it could get you by and still be great fun though. you need lots of spare time though, if im ever at a loose end i just go an try and start the diesel one and that leads to a few hours work!!!
