I like a Defender but I would choose Series. Reasons already given by others - character, ease of maintenance, no electronics, etc.
Very good point by Rob1miles, choose historic if you can and it saves getting involved with a load of legislation plus exemption from tax/MOT gives exemption from LEZ but maybe not ULEZ - better check current rules, I'm sure that discussion has been had before but I can't remember the full details now. Another good point - don't assume the 40 years rolling historic keeps rolling, it may but it may not, it used to be fixed at 1973 and I believe 1960 before that. Get 'em while you can and register as historic asap!
Interesting that station wagons (defenders) are OK but basic, pickup, truck cab etc are not, "light utility 4x4" on the v5 as quoted are not OK when it comes to LEZ charges. If you actually live in the LEZ you don't have to pay to drive within it surely do you?

Historic vehicles are ULEZ exempt.
Station wagons are OK in LEZ, but not ULEZ.

Found a Petrol Series 3 that looked promising but according to TFL site it’s £100 per day !!

Also found a 1971 diesel one. What are these like to drive?
Slow and noisy IME - but it doesn't matter what I think
- you'd need to drive it and see how you get on .... ear muffs are available ... possibly even LR branded

That could be for two reasons.
One, it might be a very late model, they were made up until 1983.
Two, it might be over 40 years old, but hasn't been registered as a historic vehicle yet.
The second might make it a good buy, provided the previous owners haven't modified it more than what DVLA will accept for historic registration.

Series 3 on parabolic springs for me. My '73 & '79 109's even had a reasonably efficient heater once the engine warmed up.

My old series 2/2a/3 bitsa truck cab was one of the warmest Land Rovers I've owned, good enough heater for a small space.
