Series 3 Series 3 Layshaft

I'm in the process of rebuilding my gearbox. When I tried to split the bell housing from the main case I struggling to get the layshaft out of the front bearing. I ended up pressing it out. I've replaced all the bearings and I'm now having the same trouble getting the shaft back into the bearing on reassembly. This is my first gearbox rebuild so I'm not sure if this normal or not. Any thoughts or ideas?

Put the shaft in the freezer and the bearing somewhere warm and try again.
