They can be shot blasted and regalvanised. This is more expensive than painting the. but retains that nice original classic look and they will last for decades again after.

There is a full set on eBay for £150 if I was closer to doing them on my rebuild I would be buying them as they have been restored and hot dipped galved

X1 you appear to want to keep it original and that's great so if you can afford it get the bits galvanised. If you don't? They'll eventually rust away. In saying that well oxidised original galve look is- original! Worst is Defenders with steel capping which is painted and rusting; another example of cheap shot manufacturing.

Yes, they can be re-galvanised.
You need to get most of the rust off. So, get them shot blasted or buy yourself a tough wire wheel for your drill. At the galvanisers' they will dip them in acid first, this removes any remaining rust.
Yes, galvanising firms will do much smaller items than that. However, they tend to have a minimum fee then a unit cost per kg of steel to be dipped on top of that. So, it's worthwhile getting as many items done as possible at the same time. Weigh your cappings and phone your nearest galv firm and ask them how much to do your cappings at Xkg plus any initial charge.
If you want to paint on top of the galv surface you need to treat it with a chemical called T Wash. This enables paint to key to it, otherwise paint will flake off.
YRM are good for all sorts of parts. Here's the link to S3 tub cappings LINKY TO YRM
