Series 3 Diesel surging when accelerating

Hi there,
My series 2A 109 station wagon with a series 3 2.25 diesel engine is surging under load when pulling away although if I give it full throttle it doesn't do it until I back off a bit. It feels a bit like fuel starvation and is causing a mild 'Kangerooing' sensation.
Not long had the car. Really struggling to get over about 40mph out of it but understand this may be standard!
Fuel filter looks old so will replace and maybe look at the pump but any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

Does it rev. Normally when stationary, Is it fitted with the solid throttle linkages, could it be engine rocking causing rod movement

It does rev normally when stationary and has the solid rod type throttle linkages. I'll take a look at the engine mounts but have a feeling they have been replace by the previous owner along with the gearbox mounts
I've only driven it about 5-6 times since buying it and it seemed to be OK including a 50 mile drive back from Manchester when I bought it. It's only the last 2 journeys I've noticed the problem.

Check and clean air filter as well as it's amazing what a new fuel and clean air filter can do but think they are only good for 50-55 anyway hope it sorgs your problem out

Thanks Graham, will do!
A local Landrover specialist I was getting a radiator panel from also told me one of the first things I should do was to clean the air filter. He said they tend to get neglected because they're oil but it can make a world of difference!

So not been able to work on it for a long while due to work commitments..... New tank & pickup as it was leaking like a sieve with any more than a gallon or so of diesel. New fuel pump although the old one seemed OK, new fuel filter and air filter refurbished as it has worn a hole in the bottom and the oil leaked straight out.

Finally realised after studying the parts diagrams that the surging was caused by a missing spring from the top of the linkage to the CAV pump and the spring on the bottom was the wrong one and badly stretched.

All sorted now with new springs. Sometimes its the simplest of things!!!
