Hello to all... Just bought my 1st Land Rover a swb 1976 series 3 diesel..and although it's slow, noisy and steers like a tanker (did I mention noisy?) i've got the bug!
Sadly the engine blows so much blue smoke that passers by probably think i've been shot down!

Because of this I'm wondering if I should follow up an offer of a 1987 2.5td engine and LT77 gearbox and LT230 transfer box, my local garage spoke of the merits of the engine and its ease to fit, but i'm wondering if I can use the gearbox and transfer box too.

Can it be done???

cheers sparticas

Engine can be definatly used but no to the gearbox/transfer box, because your axle u/j's are not designed to have power through them all the time (RR's,Discos,90's etc have cv joints which are designed to have power all the time being stronger)

same issues my end im looking at going tdi200 possibly leave off the intercooler to keep the torqe down, the tdi200 will aparently go straight on the gbox after removing 1 stud and if you get a dufender one the exhaust is eisier to mate up. no doubt the experts will clarify technicals for you later. let us know what you do...regards cartman690...:)

Wow thanks for the quick response...

Further question or questions if I may...
Do you think I would need to change the radiator and the exhaust at the same time, i've read somewhere that I might need a replacement downpipe but could then tap into the existing exhaust (although i'm happy to replace it for a 2.5td one)
Also something about an oil cooler needed?

Cheers Sparticas

Thanks for the response... will keep you posted...

2.5td has oil cooler pipes coming out of the oil filter housing, it would be easy to fit an aftermarket oil cooler as the threads are common to all oil coolers, downpipe should not present a problem.
