Series 2a wheel question

Hi , I am currently working on a 1969 series 2a 88 and just finished replacing the bearings and cleaning the hubs all up . As I was looking for a nicer wheel option other then the original steel or after market modular type I seem to have hit a wall. I am told that my only option is to switch out the 2a hub assembly to a series 3 style and then redo the bearings again and swap out the drum and drive flange. This will then allow me to bolt on a 30 mm spacer and then I can use any discovery rim. What I am wondering is there must be some type of work around . If the stud bolt pattern and the hub center bore dimensions are the same (114.3 mm please correct me if i am wrong) why can I not just get a set of 30mm hub centric spacers made from a company like Bloxsport and save myself some work?. In addition to that not to offend anyone but if they are custom can I change the bolt pattern to take a more common rim other then LR.

A 69 2a should have fitted as standard the same hub as series 3 with the lager nuts. The early 2 and 2a had studs that screwed into the hub, later type has press in studs.
 
Doesn't make sense. The S2A and S3 wheels are the same and the early S3 hubs are interchangeable with the S2A. Brake drums are interchangeable and Defender steel wheels fit a Series. I would question the advice you are getting. S3 hubs have M16 studs pulled in rather than 9/16 BSF screwed in but its not tricky to drill the hubs and put the later and much stronger studs in. The big problems with wheels is 1) the lock as they hit the spring.2) overhang as the steering will kick back very hard. Those who have put spacers on or wide wheels have found driving a challenge. The "normal" wheel upgrade is Wolfs, 6.5J rim, bolt straight on.

What do you call a nicer wheel? And if you say alloys then I'm on the next flight over to kick you in the nuts:p

thanks will the 2a 9/16 wheel stud be acceptable or do I need to have the M16 stud for the wolf rim
 
You need longer studs, the 9/16 BSF are too short because the Wolf (and clones) are thicker. Do a search, I've posted a "how to" on changing the studs, search under "wheel studs". You have to take the hubs off, screw out the old studs, drill them 16mm, recess 3mm dia 20. you have to get the right studs - 5 mm longer, they are under £1 each if you shop around. Its worthwhile as the m16 studs are much stronger and tyre places often overtighten the 9/16 and pull them out, the m16 have heads on to stop this. Moduialrs fit with std studs, Chrome modulars are the equivalent of white trainers, naff and stuck in the 80's but Yanks seem to like them.

Thanks Rob , do the standard M16 studs work i think they are 45mm long or do I need a 50 or 60mm ones
