hi, i'm looking at buying a series 2a land rover which is listed on ebay as requiring extensive chassis repairs. I'm going to go see if i can view it tommorow, can anyone tell me where i should check for rust and how i can tell if the rust is so bad that it cannot be repaired?
I know someone who does car restorations who can help me repair the damage, however i have no idea how to tell if the damage is to extensive to repair. Its going to be a restoration project between me and some friends so i dont mind doing some work, but chassis replacement would be well out of our budget.

Thanks.

if its the re-listed one with no mot and no photo's for £250 - with no bids and a day to go - that says the chassis will need replacing or extensive repairs I wouldn't bother bidding if I were you.

We have a 2a. Chassis has been repaired but so badly butchered to do so.

Our series 3 needs extensive chassis repairs this was known by aidso putting his hand through the rear crossmember. We are looking at a new chassis for it and its looking 1800+

Yea, thats the one im looking at. The previous listing of it had pictures and the outside looked quite good. Il give it a miss then and wait for a better one.
Thanks guys :)

If you are prepared to put the chassis on yourself and consider it a labour of love. I wouldn't consider that unless you had a workshop of large garage. But if you rebuild it back up, copper greasing as you go, full respray etc then it'll be worth a fair amount.

I have a 2 car garrage and 2 car drive, would that be enough room? I dont mind spending the time restoring it if i can get the money back in the end.

Anythings possible a said but galv chassis's are often on eBay and go for about £700, a lot of money I spose but a massive time and value enhancement.

You could easily spend 5k on a full rebuild, if its awesome you might just get that much for it. If its average or you get the 'look' wrong, 3k would be more like it.

Yes but once done you would never have to do a chassis repair again in your life. That has to be worth alot right there. Figure the cost of welder, steel, gas, grinders, grinding wheels, safety gear, welding helmet, and getting ****ed off, trips to A&E seems like it could be a money saver with a galvanized chassis
