Series 2A Brake shoes

Hi All,

Just fitting new brakes to the Series 2A. Can anybody help with a slight problem I have.

1, Do all shoes have spring retaining posts fitted.
2, Where does the top retaining spring attach on the opposite side to the adjusting pawl.

I have fitted new shoes, cylinders and springs to all my wheels and one of the wheels goes tight when rotating the wheel forwards, but it is free when rotating the wheel backwards. The spring is anchored to the back plate as there is no spring retaining post fitted the leading shoe. This does not seem right and is not what the manuals show.

Any help would be appreciated.

i'm guessing you have an 88" with 10" brakes all round

there are two springs in each drum, the lower one hooks to both shoes

the upper one hooks to the "leading" shoe and to the anchor post on the backplate, if the springs are set up any different to that then you have done something wrong

You may find you've fitted both shoes with the retaining posts to the other side - I seem to remember doing that once........

Many thanks for the reply. I had put the back plate with the adjuster on the trailing shoe. I have now corrected by my mistake. They are now fitted correctly, I have refitted everything and have adjusted the brake as per the manual. The wheels rotate freely in the forward direction but do not rotate as well when turned backward. As everything is new including the Drums, Shoes, Cylinders and springs. This tightness in the reward direction will probably cure it's self once the brakes are bedded in. Just a note there is no brake fluid or pipes on the vehicle at the moment.

Check the top & bottom edge of the friction material should have a chamfer on edge if not give a quick file to take the 90 degree corners off.
