Tbh thats no better as makes the bonnet very heavy, inside up against the bulkhead is the way, but thats makes a dent in an already small space.
Yes but I need the space inside as I’m a scout leader and will need four seats in the back.

I would get that spare off the door as it will wreck the door pdq.
That looks like a lovely, original station wagon. A good find and increasingly rare to be so original. The door mount for the spare is the original position for these station wagons. Whilst I like a bonnet mounted spare, as long as the door hinges are sound and you don't need to use a tow bar, you could leave the spare on the back door. Good luck.

It is not the hinges that are the issues, the door frame breaks up inside due to the weight of the wheel.

If you intend to cart a load of boy scouts around, you probably should have gone for a 109. I dont think Id like to risk carting other peoples kids around in side facing seats with dubious lap belts for protection.

And bouncing off the roof and back again, repeat for every small bump in the road. :D

Ref the spare on the rear door, the frame can be fixed/strengthened, and I'd do the third hinge mod as found on 110s etc. I need to rebuild my 110's rear door as the bottom rail has holes in it. While I'm at it I'll get the frame strengthened and will remove and refit the glass with new Butyl tape.
