I have noticed that some series 2 have what appears to be either sidelights or driving lights in the top quarter of the indicator unit. My '99 doesn't, standard indicator and standard sidelight in headlamp unit. Is this a mod or another upgrade during later series 2 models? I can't keep up with the different versions I see on cars of a similar year and this also includes the rears.

Can anyone shed some 'light' on this?

Erm, if you replace both bulbs there will def be some light on the subject ;)

ALL pre-facelift D2's have them

Standard light, see picture.

Right, so it seems pretty obvious that the car should have failed the MOT (completed before I picked it up) then as, according to you guys, I should have these fitted and working. What's the odds that both have failed and they assumed all was fine as the headlight unit has working sidelights.

Cheers chaps. Another job for the weekend.

Probably not a testable item, they are side markers not side lights, if one was working he may have noticed them a bit more.

And yes they do fail, quite often one goes and then a week later the other one lol....they are only tiny capless bulbs.

Out of interest, have you "wacked" the indicator, you may even find one comes on

The sidelight and marker light wires tend to have electrolytic corrosion at the joint with the crimp, and snap off.

I had to remake my sidelight connection with new crimps when I repaired the headlight glass last week,
