series 2 1972 offered

i have been offered a series 2 2.4 petrol tax exempt landy for £1000. this is stored in a quite a few bits in the garage where i rent the house. i have been told that all parts/seats/interior/bodywork etc etc etc is ready to fit and ready to drive once put back together.

my question is....is this worth the price??...if i buy it, it will also free up the garage to work on it, because he is has yet to empty the garage for me to use.

your thoughts would be appreciated.

tis probably worth nearer half that, if not much less - depends what state the assorted parts are in and if the chassis is well ventilated

Its the bits that you find are missing that add up. Brake lines and flexis, wheel and master cyls, maybe a clutch, brake shoes, hoses, shock, etc etc. Has the fuel tank got any holes? Whats chassis/bulkhead like?
If it is all in good cond with a load of new bits, then may be worth it. If just a heap of used and worn parts, then probably less than half of that.

£100. Saw summat like this on a nearby farm offered for £75 the other week!

It's got to be an absolutely immaculate chassis and bulkhead for that which if they are the originals I very much doubt.

the rolling chassis is all complete,engine is in, its just the body work and interior/lights/seats etc that need refitting.the owner said that he had the engine running not so long back...and of course i would want to have the engine running, and make sure 100 percent that all parts are present before handing over the cash.i'm new to all of this 4x4 lark and have just purchased a TD5....now i have the bug. this old series 2 would be ideal for throwing the dogs in the back rather than ruining the TD5 facelift model.

and more importantly.....it will be a good project to tinker with....it'll keep me off the beer:beer2:

you could do with someone who knows having a look at it for you as it's very easy to buy a pile of rust - a good running taxed and tested S2 wouldnt cost you much more than a grand these days - but it's all down to condition

For how long do you intend renting the place?.......think about the most common reason for abandoned restoration projects? TIME!

And do not fall into the mistake of underestimating how long it will actually take including chasing down missing parts/costs.........better to tell the landlord to offer it here on LZ for immediate clearance and uplift for a small fee and then you can get on with your stuff and not someone elses failed project.

very true in what you have said....i want the garage for my vintage motocross bikes rather than to do the series 2(although there is more than enough room for both) .....really and point blankly...the landlord is being a cnut, but i'm half tempted with said project.

i wont rush into things though.

i'm really new to this landrover lark so know very little ...

but even i would be very hard pressed to part with a £1000 for a landy in bits, it better have a very nice condition chassis and bulkhead for that price freewheeling hubs (dunno if they did them for that year) overdrive all panels to be near mint and absolutely bugger all missing ...

i'm looking for a swb myself, pre 73 (obviously as cheap as possible) and i'm probably going to be fitting a perkins prima for the economy, i've got a lot of chassis and bulkheads to look at before i definitely decide to buy one, hoping to find one that just the engine is knackered in but the rest will be serviceable
