Series 11A gearbox

My gearbox is making more noise than the engine, in fact I can hardly hear the engine these days, that said it still works fine, is there a common part in the box that fails with time or is it a case of box out and replaced with recon one, never done this job before and not sure I can.

The bearings will need replacing, it's not hard. If i recall i think it's the back ones that tend to go but it's a long time ago. Is it the same noise in each gear?

Yes same noise, sounds like a steam train when you are going up hill, the Engine runs sweet if you knock it out of gear. Come to think of it it’s worse in 4th gear

You actually don’t need many tools to strip the gearbox down, with the green bible and you tube most people would manage, if you don’t have the overdrive then there is just 3 parts to work on
the main gearbox, front output housing and transfer box and they can stay in there separate bits, it’s likely you would only need to look at the main gearbox to find the problems

Thanks for the advice, I may be brave and have a go, unless I can find someone with some experience , it’s in the dry so not an outside job, my fear is I will get out my depth with it and it’s in bits.

Always worth putting up a rough location area, as there may be someone local willing to help.

There’s a few on eBay at the moment, I was ina similar position and bought one off eBay to renovate and install, but in the end after renovating the spare I removed my suffix D gearbox and overhauled that and sold the other
theres lots vids on u tube I like this guy does lots of series stuff on there

and combined with manual have it all, v similar to s3
