Hello, Currently rebuilding second series 1 86, I want a fully syncro box but I also want to retain the mechanical clutch, so is it possible to bolt the series 1 bellhousing on a series 3 box?

Someone will probabaly come on here and say they've done it, but I don't think so.
Why do you want a synchro gearbox? You'll be wanting disc brakes and power steering next.

I am not stupid if I wanted Syncro powersteering a diskbrakes I would by a 90!
I have a standard series 1 80" other than engine which I enjoy driveing but my 86" is my new dailey driver so I would like it to have a few creature comforts such as syncro when you drive your series 1 80 miles aday to work you will understand!! + Alot of my mates drive my Land Rovers and its gettign tiresum teaching them all to double de clutch!

Aswell as Ashcroft series high ratio transmision box conversion doesnt fit in series 1 box so may aswell up to syncro box!

But you dont think its possible!?

No I don't, but I've learnt over the years that there is always some one will prove you wrong!

If your using it every day wouldn't it make more sense to fit a 2 1/4 as well?

i have looked in to it for my other half to drive mine. i will dig the info out. u will need to one of the gears on the shaft.

the 4 bolts holding the bell housing on are the same

have you done this? so series 1 bellhousing strait onto series 3 box
Fine I said I'd be proved wrong.
But
A series 1 petrol bellhousing will not go onto a 2.5Td (or a 2 1/4)
A diesel should, although you may need to open the holes up a bit to take the metric stud, and you may find you have to remove a stud, or perhaps a locating peg, but the basic layout is the same.
