Interesting. I have just asked then via their web chat and they said they don't offer the service as standard. I asked if it's something you can pay for but was told I had to go to an mot garage. Their web site needs updating as they list it ere as an option:

I get the feeling not many peeps on ere bothered with it anyway. I remember when I was little we would go shopping and there would be peeps with an engraver who would engrave windows while you went shopping. Pay up front and it's done by the time yer back from shopping. They were there occasionally but always seemed busy. Always stuck in my mind as a good idea and something obvious to do. You spend a lot of money buying a vehicle so trying to keep it safe or at least recognisable when stolen, was a good idea. In the hope yer may get it back at a later date or at least some of it's parts would be recognised. Crime has become more sophisticated since then. Immobilisers, trackers... have all been invented to try to curb thefts. they've all have further inventions to allow criminals to circumvent them too. Nowadays they want the keys to drive it away.

Why do they no longer offer window etching?

They did it for free for 10+ years but I guess market factors etc if others don't do it. Not much call for it these days. They have to replace the printing device that makes the etching label's anorl. So it's a cost I assume they don't want.

Well, you can get an etching kit on Ebay for £15 and it comes with 10 stickers.

It's really easy to do, put the sticker on the glass, spread the acid on the back of the sticker, wait one minute, remove sticker. Wipe with damp cloth.

Anything that might reduce the chance of theft (of the vehicle or doors) no matter how small is worth doing if it only costs £15.

Love an old fred, might have a look later. Can you use the acid to remove all the previous registrations off the glass

I actually tried that on an old mirror glass, made a right mess..... it left a cloudy mark and you could still make out the etched number.

No. The etching takes oft the surface of the glass.

Would etched windows be pointless in a series 2a? The windows are pretty easy to remove and replace.

To be frank the more yer do to identify it the better. Some would say it's not worth it if it's too easy to change the glass. But if it's stolen it's an additional thing they have to replace if they want to hide it's identity. Yer can go one step further by fitting stickers ont paintwork which permanently mark it. Look for ISR kits like this one int link below. Buy it, fit it, register it. I've done ma hippo with one of these kits.

All my windows were etched, didn’t stop the thieves, police say thrive might have a surrogate car to change windows, it would probably work with the lesser organised thieves

When a vehicle is stolen one of the things the thief will want to do to it is make money out of it. Either breaking it for parts or hiding it's identity to sell.

Making it more difficult to hide it's identity creates more work for the thief. Doesn't matter how professional a thief they are or how able they are to change the glass. They still need to replace the glass if its etched or nick another car to get hold of some free windows. But that's pointless as they still end up with a vehicle without windows.

Etching yer windows provides additional marking to the car. Yes it's easily changed but there's a chance they may not spot the etching. There's also a chance they may choose to abandon the car if changing the windows causes them more work than they want. It's true etching may not stop a vehicle being stolen but it's one of many options an owner has which is cheap and offers a chance they may get their vehicle back. Getting the vehicle back is often the priority of a LR owner as they treat their vehicle as part of the family.

Yes l agree, anything you can do to make the vehicle less attractive to thieves. Etching the windows only costs £10-20 and if it only makes it 10% less likely to get stolen it’s worth while.

etch yer windows/paintwork
register on the isr register so peeps can check if it's registered stolen with them or not

Glass etching great idea . and I have a freelander . but I feel that its unlikely that it would be stolen then number plated ect changed then sold in . so much risk for so little gain .. Although at the same time I wouldn't like it to be stolen

Etch it and you have a chance of getting it back, or parts of it being found at a later date. The chances of someone getting caught with it or the parts at a later date increases if the parts are marked.

The chap we bought our Discovery Series 2 from etched almost everything on the car. Sadly he used the first few letters of the VIN, so it's indistinguishable from nearly any other bloody vehicle built in Solihull.
