One of the final modifications I wish to make to my RRC for it's trip to Morocco later this year is a second battery + split charging system.

Part of the reason for this is to preserve the 'starting' battery as much as possible, but also because we will be taking some camera gear and a fridge with us, and the roof tent also has a light in it and wiring for two cigarette-lighter socket accessories that I want to make use of. So, a couple of questions:

1. Where would I mount the second battery? I seem to remember reading that VM diesel RRC's had two batteries, if this is true where were they mounted? Boot space is limited (LPG tank) so under the bonnet is the only real option.

2. Do you buy a 'split-charging kit' off the shelf, or buy the components to make it work?

3. Mine has the serpentine belt 3.9 V8 engine in it - is it easiest to connect the two battery positives together, and then somehow wire in a switch (+ relay?) to stop the leisure battery draining the car battery when the engine is off? Or take a feed straight from the alternator?

4. Bearing in mind I have limited auto-electrical knowledge and experience, is this something I can DIY or a professional job?

5. Lastly, I need to have a power outlet coming out towards the rear/roof of the car - I was thinking through the soft plastic rear pillar covering rather than bodywork, is this a good idea? Need to run wires for the roof tent and a CB aerial.

Cheers all! :)

I've done this in mine.

Both batteries under the bonnet

I used a split charge system from tmax- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T-Max-Dig...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item415a59a03a

Both batteries are connected via a solenoid that the tmax system controls

Yes, you can do it :)

No idea, I'd worry about water ingress if your proposing what I think your proposing.

Thanks guys. Is MHM Mad Hat Man?

Steve - good news, any pics of yours showing where it was mounted and the wiring in place?

The other option which I did consider would be to affix a solar panel to the roof of the roof tent, but not sure how much power this would generate - plenty of sunshine in Morocco, of course! Bet a large solar panel is expensive, though.

rrc has provision for two batts..same place on each inner wing!

You should cover up at least the naked positives or you may feel the brute force of batteries one day.
More than one has lost eyesight and/or being badly burnt, mate of mine will confirm that - on the positive side he got 1/2 year off work...

No idea Mike but hats off to you for confidently planning such a trip with the old dutchess when so many plump for newer diesel powered motors. I hope all goes well & look forward to your posts(?) when you return. I've a classics man myself, so I'll be rooting for you mate!

Haha, thanks! Plenty think I'm mad/foolish, mainly because of A) it's a V8 and may overheat and B) it's on air suspension.

I have been recommended to add Millers Cooling Additive to the coolant before I go, this lowers engine temperatures by up th 15'C, which combined with a working viscous fan should be fine. I have also replaced all four air suspension air springs, will check all the lines before I go and will also be rebuilding the compressor with a service kit soon.

Other than that, it carries the same potential 'problems' of any other car, really! Can't wait :)

I Ran Wetter Water in my supercharged VR6 and my big turbo skyline. Made a noticeable difference.
