excitement in seaton. up here this week working at hartlepool power station when we returned to the b&b about 5.30pm and right outside the door was a rather large gathering of police, armed response units, dog handlers, coast guard, fire brigade and 3 ambulances thrown in for good measure, along with the crowd which accumulates around any such small-town gathering. of course seeing policemen on the beach with guns requires further investigation so I joined the happily speculating crowd.

it was some nutter tanking around in a standard 300tdi disco up and down the beach playing cat and mouse with the police and coastguard wagons (a disco 3 and a jap pickup), dodging them by driving into the sea, and apparently threatening to top himself. apart from failing quite abysmally to climb the dunes, I did watch him barrel full tilt head first into the surf, up over his bonnet up to the windows, then stop, turn around and drive back out without so much as a splutter. about 7 hours he was going for (without running out of juice) until apparently he did actually drown it eventually just after dark, - just after I got bored and went to bed - at which point they sent in the dogs and the armed response and nicked him.
