Sealant for snorkel

OK, so my Safari snorkel arrived yesterday. If I get out of work early enough to still have some daylight, I'll be fitting it this afternoon.

I remember a while ago there was a link on here to a utube video with guy fitting one. He said to use sealant on both sides of the neoprene gasket (although that doesn't have to be waterproof) and more importantly to seal the rubber hose under the bonnet.

Can anyone recommend a sealant to use? Ideally something i can get from Screwfix, B and Q or Halfords.

Does it have to be mould proof or any other special properties?

I assume black colour is a good idea. But could I get away with clear?
 
I just bought a snorkel - it's still sat in a box in my garage. It came with a small tube of clear silicon sealant. Although there are special versions for bathrooms, fishtanks, etc. for your purpose any of them will do the job.
 
I used clear RTV silicon for my safari snorkel, and it stalls the engine when the snorkel head is covered with a bag or similar, so it must be sealed up well. I got the silicon from ebay for about £4 and being clear, keeps the joints nice a tidy. I also sealed up all the airbox and hoses of the air intake.

So hoping that was ok.

Should have read the fitting instructions properly before going to screwfix though. Didn't realise you have to Loctite the rubber band thing to the snorkel shaft till I got to that stage. All I could find was some old gripfil in the garage.

Still it seemed to work ok. Pretty sure the glue is only needed to keep the band in place when you squeeze on the snorkel head. And its now been tested at the flat out warp speed of 70 this morning and nothing flew off, so all good. :)
 
Yeah, will do that later or tomorrow.

Also there was a step I skipped in the instructions due to lack of daylight. It said to take off the bottom cap of the water trap, seal that with silicone and put it back on.

So will get those sealed and try to stall it with a bag.
 
Most silicon sealants hate water and when are completly submerged or water gets trapped they all go mouldy(dont believe what they say) then peel off, as it is a safari one it doesnt need the silicon going through the wing. Personally for water resistance, mould resistance and generally not letting go i use PU sealant about £3.50 a tube from toolstation, I use the stuff to seal core vents on buildings, neve had one leak or peel off but the ****ty silicon does so does the builders sealant eventually.
