Later today I am starting work on stripping my 90 to replace the body cappings and a few other jobs, refurbish seats, new windscreen seal, door locks, hinges, discs and pads, standard shocks, bonnet release, new seals for all the body, prep and hand paint in same colours and more.
I have never even so much as undone a nut on a Land Rover before. I have gathered all the parts I need and I am armed with a Haynes Manual and Busters tips re doors, locks, shock replacements ect. and I have borrowed a dry garage to use.

I have researched as best I can but once stripped down and carefully putting bits/screws etc in labled boxes I then will have to replace rusted/sheared nuts, bolts and screws. (I have the 4 odd shaped double ended bolts for the body cappings and correct rivets) but apart from that I have nothing and will have to take samples to a hardware store for new ones as I dont know the sizes.

Do I replace with plain steel or try and get stainless steel nuts and bolts?
What type of sealant is best to use in adition to the rubber seals on the body, side to roof and roof? Any tips on this would be very helpful. I hope to have a waterproof Land Rover  and yes, I still believe in Father Christmas:)

I have been replacing my fixings gradually with stainless from Alpha Fasteners (a local independant retailer) and they have been very helpfull. I have just been buying a few fixings at a time and the cost is mininimal over standard steel. As far as sealant is concerned I use Sikaflex 292 in black - in my view its the best, flexible and hardwearing, certainly has helped waterproof my 90...

That is really helpful advice from all of you.... I will use Sikaflex. Just taken the roof off and all but 2 of the nuts and bolts are in A1 condition so I am pleased about that. A few strange black 2 core wires that have just been cut off in the headliner and a very very thin single core in black that looks like some sort of ariel. Must be from when the coastgaurd used it. I will leave well alone!

I use stainless for most of my fixings... bodywork, pedals etc... but not for mechanical movin' parts likes props and stuff.
Ah get all my nuts, bolts washers from a local place and they're quite cheap for their stainless stuff. What ah do is take a bolt from say one of the pedal boxes, note how many are needed, stick it in a jiffy bag sayin' how many and what for. The folk ah deal with just take a look at it and match it for me then stick the relevant number in the bag.
Ah've heard that the sikaflex stuff is meant to be good, never tried it myself, I use the Arbosill stuff meself as I get the odd tube from me neighbour for nothing ;):D

Thank you for all your posts re fixing stuff.... invaluable to everyone. I have bagged up my nuts and bolts and will look at stainless stuff.

Having taken off the door seals at the 'junctions' that roof meets side stuff etc I see duct tape? with some sort of sealant that is black and flexible. Am I right in thinking this is duct tape and Arbosill or Sickaflex to esure a good seal and try and keep us dry?
Anyone any ideas on that please?

If its black and flexible its likely to be "Dum Dum" again I have used that all over the place on my 90 (door tops, footwells, under the seats, cubby box etc) to stop all the water spray entering my cabin. Sikaflex sets, but Dum Dum remains black and sticky - very usefull stuff and cheap...
