Hi Chaps.

How do I go about finding off road routes/ greenlanes / byways in scotland. I understand they are not on ordnance survey maps so what do I do ???

Cheers

As far as I have been told, Scotland doesn't have any byways as such. There may be one or two tracks marked as road on the map or "other routes with public access" that havent been closed but not really sure about those.

I would be tempted to join a local 4 x 4 group. They will have all the details of routes you can drive locally and is likely they will have access to off road areas on private land that you would be unable to drive without membership.

Either that or come to England where we still have a tiny percentage of lanes kept from the bobble hat malicia.

I am considering joined the Mad on Mud club in Fife. But I do chance my luck and VERY slowly drive along the odd tracks I come across. Last year (just after I'd bought my Defender,) I asked a farmer who was baling hay if I could drive around his field and he was ok with it. I know of a place just north of Glasgow where I lived as a child that I will try the next time I'm in the area.

Why don't you scots lads get into your UserCP and put your approximate locations up in your posts. You are much more likely to get help if we know where you are.

A new club has been formed in Scotland solely for the purpose of Green Road driving. As you are aware, the laws in Scotland differ from those in England and Wales.
Most of the driving is on private roads, so places visited are off the beaten track and most of the scenery is breathtaking.
We have been on 3 very enjoyable runs since the club, Scottish Green Road Club was founded a few weeks ago. The last run was in the company of the Dutch Land Rover Register, and was a great day out.
The next run will be on the 12th June. Details on the website:

New members are most welcome.

Could be interesting Geoff, by co-incidence, I am on holiday for the week after the next planned meet - I'll maybe try to get down to it.

We could do with a little more detail of the planned route though. There not a lot of detail as to distance (fuel required) but the club is new so hopefully will improve if enough are interested and join in.

I'll be keeping my eye on it.

The SGRC has become quite popular with Green Roaders. Being the only club in Scotland catering solely for green roading, we now have over 50 members.
The website is now greatly improved, thanks to Sandy, our Founder and Chairman, and has lots of photographs of the runs we have been on. (Six so far).
Our next run will be on 20th November. Venue to be finalised and will be posted on the Website.
The SGRC now hosts a Forum, linked from the Website.
Geoff:)

Hope you have a good weekend at Lamancha. I hear it's a great site.
One of our, (SGRC), forum members, Lenny, is hosting an Autojumble/Off Roading event in Helensburgh on 3rd December. Sounds like it could be a good day out.
Details are on our forum.
Geoff :)

SGRC next run will be on 15th January 2012. Sandy has arranged for us to visit Glen Shira. This is a superb run, especially if there's a chance of snow. Bring your sledge!!
Geoff:)
