Good day. Just joined this forum as now the proud owner of a 1986 Santana Land rover.
The past owner had added many parts sourced here in Spain, some good some bad.
Question I need to ask is the diameter of exhaust. It's a 2.5 diesel with a 50 mm main down pipe, main section but from the back box the pipe drops to 40 mm.
Is this correct or has the past owner fitted a 2.25 diesel rear section?
Live in the mountains and have a 5 mile uphill climb to do with the land rover getting quite hot near the final bit, wondering if this could be the cause.

Not really got pics of the land rover against the mountain back drop as yet, over heat problem is making me a little hesitant about going too high but here is one of Santana

I don't know for sure but i wouldn't think that a 40mm center/rear section exhaust is the right dimesion. 50mm sounds right ....

I wouldn't have thought the exhaust would cause the engine to overheat ... when you say "getting quite hot near the final bit" are you seeing your temp gauge rise (above the middle) ?
 
The land rover is running cold at the moment, flushed the rad out a few times and it was very black. We have a 5 mile climb in 3 rd all the way, starts the climb nearly on cold and gets to near the red by the time we get to the top, plateau for a mile to our home and it's cold again by the time we get home.

I'd get some Radflush stuff and flush the whole system, reverse flushing it too, then replace the thermostat.
I'd also check all the hoses to be sure none have delaminated.
It actually could be that a previous owner simply removed the stat which would make it run cold. It is then a slight possibility that because it would affect the flow of coolant around the system, i.e the absence of a stat, that it could then run hot, or the sender could indicate hot.
No stat plus partially blocked rad would deffo give these symptoms.
 
Thanks, have flushed out, both forward, backwards and sidewards even. Hoses replaced, not got a new thermostat yet as need to order from UK but it's not a gauge thing, it is getting hotter as I climb.not losing water so head gasket not gone. Might be a timing issue but it was the question about exhaust I needed an answer to. Wasn't sure if for some unknown reason it had a smaller final pipe to give back pressure or some reason

Perhaps the previous owner simply had to replace it and couldn't find one the right size or couldn't afford one!
To be sure of a head gasket you need to do a compression test.
Although some people will insist that engines need back pressure it is frankly a load of balls.
You are right about timing, it can make a difference, so yes, get that checked as soon as you can.
But even if you have flushed the rad all ways till Sunday it is still possible that bits of it are blocked. If you can feel it all over you may find cool spots and/or hot spots. Also have you checked the pressure cap? If that is faulty/leaking the engine will run hot.
 
I would be looking at the fan, is it fitted? is it fitted the correct way? Iirc you can fit series fan ether way, but the curvature of the blades means it only works properly one way.
 
Welcome, the scenery where you live is amazing! Hope you get to the bottom of the issue, some good points made i definitely think check the fan like Lynall mentioned
 
Thanks for all the advice on the overheating. Have hit most of the ideas already but it was really the exhaust I was wondering about as going to maybe order a complete new one from UK and hoped to get it right first time, getting stuff into Spain is hard enough without having to return it

Ok take this from me or not.
But when I tune a car one of the first things I do is increase the bore of the exhaust and thus reduce the amount of resistance there is to it.
So for my 300tdi Disco I bought a LR sports exhaust, bigger bore and only one box. Less resistance to exhaust gases escaping so better performance but no downside re fuel consumption. Also it's in stainless so less chance of it rusting out.
An engine at the end of the day is a heat pump. The easier the flow the better the performance.
But I still think this isn't the base of you your problem.;)

Good point that, would make sense when the engine is working hard and overheats if it cant get rid of the gasses fast enough.

The arse end of the pipe does nothing (admittedly it should not reduce in size) its all done in the front bit and depends what you want, unless its a 2 stroke;), did you ever wonder why Yamaha made great organ pipes before they made motorcycles;).

Yamaha? Organ pipes?
Wallll I doo declare! neva knew that!!! Though they do make good musical instruments. I have a Yamaha guitar and have heard Yamaha trumpets and they are OK.
I agree "put a bigger pipe on it and it'll go faster" would be an over simplification, which is why I bought a special one i.e. one deliberately made for a specific vehicle.
Deffo needs another fred and not sure I could be assed to get into it too deeply.
But I still don't think this is his overheating problem.
