Hi Guys, I've just received a recall notice (N706) from JLR about the dodgy welds on the ends of some Defenders front axle. I think it's pretty much accepted by all, including the main dealer mechanics I've spoken to, that JLRs' fix for this issue is not really a proper fix at all, and will still result in partial loss of control if the weld fails, especially at motorway speeds. My question is, has anyone managed to speak to JLR about this, and what was the response. I've emailed Customer Services (no response), and I've also sent an email to Tracey Tomsett, JLRs' public relations manager, but unsurprisingly had no reply from her either. Is anyone else trying to get some sort of answer from JLR about this issue?

It's a well known fault but not sure how many have actually failed.
I would get the part fitted, doubt you will get anywhere with JLR.

Agreed, trying to get anywhere with any corporate is a waste of effort. Sadly, it will likely take a fatal RTA resulting from this fault to get the issue fixed properly (replacing the axle), and the involvement of the cops and insurance companies.

I have today put my defender 2.4 puma (2010) in to my main dealer for recall N706.
I was asked if the vehicle had been wax oiled to which I told them it has been undersealed
every year & they have said getting the bolts out of a vehicle that has been wax oiled/undersealed has been a problem & I would have to pay for new bolts as this is not covered by the recall.
Any other job they do they fit new bolts & nuts without asking.
I am a mechanic by trade & I have never come across this before.
I think they are just trying to bull**** me into making some money out of me .
I will just have to see when I pick my vehicle up tomorrow.

Underseal such as waxoyl is pretty bad for getting bolts out so yes they will jam up in the windy gun and probably need to be wacked out.
Really new bolts ought be fitted on everything in my opinion but hey there just trying to save money.

Tell them to **** off, they should replace nuts and bolts when mechanical parts are removed or replaced, as you well know.
Nylon lock nuts if I remember correctly.

Hi. I have worked on cars, plant & farm machinery all my life and never had any problems
I am now 68 years old and have worked on most things with no problem. a bit of heat most things will give up.

There not allowed to heat them up at the main dealers anymore.
If the windy gun don't do it then it's scrap

They are not tradesmen anymore just parts fitters !
Not all techs are monkeys, some are quite good and know what they are doing.
Remember they are just the company's dog bodies and have no say in company policy.
It's good practice to replace nuts and bolts and I'm sure the tech is capable of cleaning the thread first but isn't allowed the time at £150 per hr.
Anyway, good luck and I hope your swivel doesn't fall off!

It sounds like you are on the side of the stealers my friend.
As a mechanic I have only ever used an impact wrench on wheel nuts (wagons tractors etc) I would never use on regular nut & bolts, the best way of rounding off, & then they have to be cut out, Plus you have got no feeling how tight they are they should always be tightened & cracked off by hand.
In the case you need to know by feel what is happening.
Any way we are getting off the subject, I will pick my vehicle up today when they ring & I will see what they have to say.

As far as charging for the Nuts n Bolts, I would also tell them to swivel.
If they are nyloc then I would bet that the official LR manual would say "replace" anyway, so it should all be covered in the recall.

When you pick it up ask what happens when/if yours do break?

Let us know what they say cos I still think its just a bandaid/cover up job when they really know what should be done but wont cos of cost.

No chance that I am on the dealers side, just saying that the technician doesn't really have a say, capable or not.
Personally I think LR should be replacing the axle but I'm no expert.

Hi,
I have had a phone call from my local dealer to say they can`t get the bolts out of the axle.
It will have to go back in next week as they have had to order a new set of bolts & they will have to cut the old bolts off with the gas axe. I don`t think they have even looked at it.
They have had the vehicle all day and done ****all not happy.

When you collect it (before you leave) look under you will see if they tried or not .

I am going to look under and I will see if they had a spanner on the bolts.
I asked who was going to pay for the bolts as I am not & was told they will be covered
under the recall.
When I took the vehicle in they said they had ordered new bolts because they have had this problem before, Now they say they have had to order them & have no bolts.
Someone is not telling the truth

May as well just put up with it.
The vehicles are not worth much used these days so go with what you have.
