S3 jumps out of gear

Hi LandRover people

Have recently acquired an S3 88" diesel.

It runs well but has jumped out of second and fourth gear a few times, not during acceleration but either whilst tickling the throttle in fourth gear or on slow (low box) descent with engine braking.

Any ideas? It might not have the correct oil...it was low when i bought it so i topped up with 'normal' gearbox oil, on the grounds that, on a temporary basis, the wrong oil was better than none at all.

Have a lookat this link, some of the info is relevent regarding jumping out of gear.

There is a range of possibilities for the gears jumping out, normally broken spring clips in the synchromesh assy (have you found any spring steel clips in the G box oil drain?) Detent springs jammed or broken /missing, massive wear/broken bush assy.
