My front crank seal in my S3 2.25 petrol is leaking. Do I need any more parts other than the rubber seal itself to change? I haven't found much info online. All I keep finding is threads about the rear seal.

Thanks.

My front crank seal leaks too but Ive put off replacing it because it looks like a lot of work. I believe there was a.thread on here about drilling out the rivets that hold the cover plate on and then tapping the holes to allow it to be replaced with screws. If I was going to change mine, that is what I would do. If your radiator hoses are old like mine, you should replace them too. Other than that and the new seal there isnt anything else to replace. Make sure you get the seal from a reputable source.

Be prepared to replace the front crank pulley as well, they don't cost a lot and your old one may have a groove worn in and will not seal.

Hi, recently did this job. I’d recommend you don’t try to do it without removing the timing cover. I did and ended up having to then do it properly as the self tappers snapped.

If you do remove the timing cover, the mud shield will stay in place with the original rivets. You could decide to tap new screws and replace the rivets to make it easier next time, just make sure your source screws that have small heads to fit past the lip.

the seal itself. Get a decent one. There’s a double lipped one which might solve the groove problem. If your pulley is scrap, let me know as I bought one a new one but didn’t need it. Happy to send.

Thanks for the help all. Don’t know how soon I’ll get started but I’ll let you know how it goes.
