I've got to ask the obvious question - any marks on the lock which might
suggest what the key number might be? We were not so careful about
hiding such things then!

If you're lucky there may be the whole number in the pattern FS123 or
just the 123 bit.

Most Land Rover locks of this vintage did have FP/FS key prefixes I
think (anyone else care to tie that down further?)

You may already have enough information to work out your key number.

If that doesn't yield anything the next step would be to remove the lock
and take it to someone selling pre-cut keys and trying a few. It's not
such a daunting task there are surprisingly few differs in common use.
Try all your friends - there will be lots of old keys lying around in
drawers.

(In those days before steering locks etc. you don't even need a key to
start the 'car' and drive around so you're not actually immobilised.)

And when you do succeed - get a spare!!

If its an old lock barrel then its probably worth just getting a
selection of keys and trying them all till you find one that works.
the barrel will most likely be fairly worn.

Most of the 2A ignition locks ive seen use the same type of key as
series landy door locks which are also the same as a lot of filing
cabinets!

With the 5 keys i have accumulated for the doors and ignition on my
landy i can get into and start a fair few of my mates landies and also
a fairly large number of the filing cabinets at work! :)

I've discovered a number FS 898 stamped on the front of the lock - so now
I'm going to try find a locksmith or someone who can make me a new one -
anyone got a FS898 key out there?
Steve

That wasn't so painful was it? You should have no problems from this
point on.
