Taking advantage of the fact it had been dry weather for the past ten days last weekend I went to town on the underneath of Freddo ready for winter

On Saturday I first jacked up the drivers side, brushed of any loose rust - Wasn't much to be honest apart from the Petrol tank cradle. Then I gave all the chassis and petrol tank cradle a double treatment of KuRust rust stopper. I know this works well from years of use on my motorbikes. It turns bare rust black and gives it a coat that you can leave or paint. Then switched the car round and did the passenger side.

Sunday I sprayed the entire underneath with Tectane PS 697 protection wax. This was sourced from Toolstation. I went a bit mental and used five cans spraying loads into the holes in the chassis and made sure everything had a good coat.

I decided on using this PS 697 because I had good reports from friends who had used it last year and at £3.65 a can is a bargain in my opinion. It certainly went on well leaving a thick coat of wax. Tectanes description :- Offers long lasting protection from corrosion, oxidation and dirt. After the wax has dried up, there remains a sticky, plasticine like, water repellent film which is almost colourless. Salt water and heat resistant up to +100°C[i/]

Must admit after a weekend of rolling about on the floor under Freddo with arms out stretched a lot of the time I could hardly move on Monday and the tops of my shoulders were on the worst. Reminded me of my Weight training days.

I had a nice feeling of achievement though and of course I had saved most of the £60 I had been quoted to give Freddo a quick squirt of Waxoyl by the local Garage. Plus I did a far better Job

Lee:)

Every little helps mate defo on all the brake pipies and the tank cradle and plus you had a bit of a work out!!!!!!

That looks good value - where do you get it?

What is the best stuff to use on the stonechip surfaces of the rear wheel arch? I have a 10p size patch that needs the rust rubbed off and then re-coated with something like the thick stuff they apply at the factory.

It's all worth it...granted it was 'back in the day' but when I was younger driving assorted 'bangers', I lost 2 otherwise nice driving cars on MOT fails due to under-body rust making the welding required uneconomical. I bet a few bottle o' wax would have prevented that.

job well done like you have done it ,some just spray the stuff on and never bother to treat it first or even get the flaking rust of then a year latter it is worse than ever.:5bhurray:

Hi , mines 8 years old in November , I have made a start with the waxoyl , but got to finnish it , worst item for rust was the fuel tank cradle , that was tarted up for the mot , brake pipes and side runner brackets need some protection , but look at todays weather total washout

This is the stuff. I buy loads of stuff from Toolstation as they're like a cheap Screwfix and generally its good quality stuff. Theres always workmen buying their supplies when I pay a visit.

Toolstation > Automotive > Lubricants & Sprays > Protection Wax

Its good that you saved a bit of money . Wait till things start to NEED replacing and fixing , that's the fun bit . I doubt it was a waste of time , i just wouldn't bother . I've had mine 7 years its a 98 xedi and rust is the least of my worries .

They dont use much salt on the roads here, even when they should .

I'm hoping to keep Freddo for a few years. He's in fine mechanical fettle at the moment (touch wood). I only bezz around York and have an occasional trip over to Manchester to see my daughter. So I intend looking after him where I can and I've found that you have fewer problems with my previous vehicles.

I love the height of the seats, driving position, comfort, roominess of the Freelander and if you offset the very reasonable purchase price against running repairs it makes financial sense over buying a newer car and suffer depreciation at an alarming rate no matter what make of car you buy

Plus its nice owning a British car
