I have had a good look underneath at prop bolts, props and U spring bolts plus I have had the wheels balanced but I still have this rumble in 3rd & 4th gears. Although I said last time I could drive out of it after giving it a run yesterday that's not true it just gets faster so less obvious. Any more suggestions ~ gearbox??

Gearbox output shaft bearing? Loose hand brake drum? Well worn UJ?
Try dropping the rear prop off and driving in 4WD. Do you have free wheeling hubs? I have had one break up giving this sort of bother.
When rear prop is off spin rear wheels to see if they are smooth+ have a wiggle on the diff input flange.

How strange - just posted a thread with a similar problem - should have searched more thoroughly I know.
all is well apart from a knocking, rumble in 3rd and 4th.

Mine only happends when its cold - its goes when the oil gets up to where ever the noise is coming from .

Hi, I finally got around to taking the rear prop off and the uj's look ok to me. Now I am no mechanic far from it I am learning slowly as I go but I put it in four wheel drive and the car doesn't move! I jumped out and the front prop shaft is spinning but no wheel movement does this mean my front diff has gone ?
