RTV on timing case gasket?

Looking at the engine mating surface of my timing case cover (200TDI Disco Engine in 1987 90) it is fairly rough. I don't like using RTV but I may have no choice. What do you think, try it without and hope its ok at the weekend when driving door deep in mud and water, or just use it and stop over thinking this stuff

(The water pump side is also suspect.....)

Don't use loads like i did. when i took it off a lot had seeped out into the inside of the case. I'd suggest the thick oOEM gasket and a little bit of sealant should be fine unless its really worn.

Cheers for the advice. The faces look like someone split them with a chisel

I put a fairly thin smear on both sides but alas I think even that was too much as it has sqidged out!!

I will know better for next time

The covers tend to seize on the studs and peeps pry them off with screwdrivers damaging them.
You could dress down any high spots and fill gouges with chemical metal maybe?

Cheers, I have reassembled it now. Hopefully it will be ok driving through the mud and water this weekend

Or fill the gaps with sealant. Let it dry so you now have a flat surface some of it brought up to level with sealant then use a normal gasket with a smear of sealant to hold it in place. Doesn’t need to hold any pressure just keep water out
