I have been trying to find Michelin xm+s 244 tyres original factory spec. Does anyone have any knocking around they’d like to sell? I’ve nearly completed the set for my restoration. I’ve been finding the best ones on the spare wheels of rotten RRC’s

I’ve got 4 , 3 are virtually like new condition. One has been used but still 8mm. I want 1 more in top condition. There were 4 in Germany that’d never been unwrapped €90 I missed out though. I believe the G wagon was issued with the same tyres as the RRC.

Hmmmm... my P38 had 4 full-tread Pirelli Scorpions on it when I bought it.
However one failed unexpectedly and at the worst possible moment.
Checking the car afterwards showed all 4 tyres by their DOT-Codes were mutton dressed as lamb and all were over 10 years old and perishing.
Quickly changed for brand-new boots. Better safe than very sorry.

I had these, brilliant tyres, one of the few with the option to fit studs into.
Does anyone know a modern replacement that's as good all round as these were?

Here are two of mine

Plenty of meat! That’s a good find. Michelin do the XZL but it doesn’t have the siping for snow. Unless they do an M+S version which would be very close to the xm+s 244

I hope if your fitting tyres over ten years old even if unused that you are not using them on the road, As stated above tyres have a maximum use/storage life usually between 6 - 10 years before the rubber starts to decompose. Any tyres older than that should only be used on museum pieces

Museum
Who cares what you think
No I’m not doing a resto
I just keep stuff
But if I get another one like my three
I’m for sure going to mount them
And drive them till they pop

original tyres are going to be close to 30 years old plus and more depending on year manufacturers still make original size and tread patterns. 3 plus year old rubber will run like crap as well as having deteriorated. but its your RRC its your choice

What I would like to have them for
There is a Btitish car show here every year
And all makes are welcome
I go
And thought it would be good thing to have the original tires on the rover
I’m sure they can stand a 40 mile run
And I’ve seen way worse tired being used than the ones I have

The tyres are fine mikie, we’re not talking perishes and cracked tyres here, my friend runs the same on his restoration he managed a full set he has another full set for his 2nd RRC resto. What is more interesting he works in a lab for Dunlop, so he certainly knows plenty about rubber, he said manufacturers will tell you tyres are best changed after a time to save their ass and sell more tyres but rubber has an incredible life span. Rubber roofing is the latest for flat roofs it’s only couple mm thick and is guaranteed for 30 years it will however last much longer . The same suspects will say the same about remoulds which I must add there is nothing wrong with otherwise they wouldn’t use them on lorries, buses jumbo jets etc etc. At best I think some are ill informed and quick to believe everything they hear. You’ll find no legislation on tyre age only tyre condition what does that tell you ?
