Can anybody give me a little help in making my mind up on either diesel or petrol P38??

My current disco II TD5 has been enjoyable even with the constant trips back to the dealer but I am now thinking of changing for a Range Rover. I tow a large caravan and have heard the diesel is a bit poor on towing, can anyone tell me different?? Would a "chip" upgrade be a better option than going for the wallet crippling thurst of one of the petrol models??

Any advice would be much appreciated

Hi
The final decision can only be made by you, but for me personally it`s got to be the v8. My car is the 4.6 hse on lpg and it`s quite cheap to run, the gas here is 36ppl. I recently borrowed my fathers deisel toyota while i was having work done on my range rover, it`s very good on fuel giving over 30mpg and it crippled me, i went to minehead for a week and put in £125.00 of fuel. Although i get less mpg than my dads it still doesn`t cost anywhere near that to run the range rover, last time i took my car on the same trip i put in £70.00, and it`s got plenty of pulling power and it sounds nice.

Got to say I agree I run a 4.6 with sequential lpg conversion and it is a lot more refined than the 2.5d - cheaper to run and alot nicer also the specs on interiors were better on the 4.6 models hope this helps

thanks for the response gents, am going to get the autotrader out this afternoon and go and have a look at both petrol and diesel.

Me the missus and the kids went looking today. 4.0 se in grey (cheap but bit of a dog) red 2.5DSE did seem a bit guttless, Blue 4.6HSE, did not get to drive this as yet but looked good and sounded very nice!!:D

Neil if you are in the area (milton keynes) you are quite welcome to try mine out as a comparison before i sell it. It as 4.6 HSE LPG

Thanks for the link, looks very nice, we are going looking again next weekend maybe if you have not sold it by then we might have a look.

Hi
I do use listers but i have an account, drive in i think it`s .40ppl but put £100 down to open an account then you get a tag to use self service 24 hours, if you get rid of the car you get your £100 back when you close the account.

For my twopeneth. I've had a classic vogue, mondeo estate, p38 and a fiesta all converted to lpg. Economics/paybackperiods/future tax hikes aside, once you've run on L.P.G it's impossible to consider paying 92p litre for juice. My tip, for what it's worth, is get a known quantity/quality r rvr and get it converted yourself from a known and trusted local guy using the latest kit.I wouldn't comment on deisels. Those that run them wouldn't change for the world. The penny's never dropped with me, though. I tow a fairly lengthy and heavy[thanks to the wife's overloading] twin axle bessacarr thing, and the p38 4litre on l.p.g does even better than the classic on l.p.g did. regards P.S

Sorry i should have said when you open the account then you pay .36ppl.
I originally run a 3.9 classic on lpg then had a 2.0 nissan x-trail for 18 months before having this p38. The 4.6 is cheaper to run on gas than the x-trail was on petrol, i used to put £38.00 a week in fuel in the nissan, i do the same trips now and use £21.00 a week in lpg. No contest really.
