RR 4.6 Thor v8 in my D2 v8…

Soooooo my lovely v8i has oil leaking from the gaskets, air in the engine (somewhere I’m still new to this). Was quoted a lot to repair/replace so after reading a few other posts and Google I just bought a 4.6 Thor v8 on eBay (65,000 miles) as the price difference with fixing them was negligible. I’ve been told this will fit in my disco - anything I should know before fitting? I’m army and there’s a LR mechanic/technician who’s been helping me out on camp (the whole fleet is still defender).

Did you get the engine ecu?
do you have diagnostics?
do you have a light left foot?

Assuming auto box.
the disco ZF4HP22 is not as strong as the 4.6 HP24.
so you would need to change some bits to mate them, and then be gentle.

If it’s manual (don’t know cos you haven’t said;)) and I don’t know if they did manual 4.0 in a disco
then it should bolt up. But you would need the flywheel off your engine, as the 4.6 was never manual.
you could possibly run the 4.6 on the 4.0 Thor ecu but it IMO is asking for trouble.

physically straight swap :).

Thank you! The guy selling it is mentioned on these forums numerous times so feel like he’s trustworthy a “Charles from wales” so I’ll ask about the ecu etc.

Yes auto.
Yes all the extras brakes hoses, etc etc etc

Light left foot?? Is everyone a race car driver on here haha, I use my right for braking and accelerating…in the U.K. mind.

The 4.6 can hurt the hp22 auto box.

I know the RR has both tunes in the engine ecu, and can be changed with diagnostics. I do know they did a rare for export only 4.6 disco so this maybe possi

But I have no idea about the discovery or even if it will accept the ecu from a RR.

Question for @sierrafery can the disco ecu be changed to run a 4.6, or can the ECU from a Range Rover be used in a disco.

Charles from Wales is not always mentioned on this forum in a good light.
Infact I'm shocked he is selling his stuff using this forum as a reference.

I have read a lot from the US that it must be possible also seen the 4.6 export like to say - Really useful to have this input though thank you.
