Rotten doors your time has come

I've already sawn down the mounting part of the offside guard. I just need to get it welded up in its new shorter form and I'll be done. What I need is a swingaway wheel carrier that doesn't foul the light guard. The 265/75 I had on the back door messed it up within a week.

I reckon it's definately worth a bit of extra outlay to have a great result.

Mine will be back on the road in 2 weeks, I have a Jaguar XK8 as well, I alternate them in 6 month lumps because I can't drive them both , when I see my neighbours paying out £300 a month for a euro box they'll never own my £4000 jag and £3000 defender look fantastic value for money

I can safely say yours is better, the lacquer on mine came out a bit flat as the day it was painted was the only day it didn't rain but it was over 90 degrees in the tent we'd assembled to paint it

I think my respray cost around £500 but it's still not finished, there's flatting and polishing to do plus while changing the battery box I found a big hole in the footwell

Looks really good mate, certainly puts by hand painted 90 to shame, although so far I have spent £62.43.

A good hand painted job isn't that bad but yes it's great job you done it looks pukka

Wack, I admired your home paint job while I was waiting for mine to be done and started to ask myself if I should have simply done it myself. I do think my results would hold a candle to yours so I'm glad I had a paint shop involved. But did they have problems! Originally I wanted the landy to be metallic orange like the Chevrolet Camaro colour but the paint shop guy said ' you can have it any colour you like but in my opinion that will look ****'. he may have been right, he may not have been. However, he steered me towards a darker colour and, at the time, he was painting a Dodge Ram in metallic black (an Aston Martin colour if memory serves) so I simply said to do it in the same colour as the Dodge Ram. After that chat and after the work had started they suggested they would paint it in gloss black as the budget was looking a bit stretched. I considered this but decided I wanted metallic so they did it in the Jaguar colour. However, when they put the primer on this apparrently reacted with the paint underneath (the Landy had already had a blow over in Rioja red) so they had to scrape it back to bare ally and start again. This and the fact that they paint it a panel at a time and reassemble it meant it took way longer than the original estimate and I ended up badgering them every other day. In fairness though the price of the paint job was honoured despite all the additional work. For some reason the doors are not as glossy as the rest of the body so I need to polish them to match. I bought a polisher from Machine Mart and some finishing polish but the polish does not seem aggressive enough and after 20 mins of polishing there is only a tiny difference. Does anyone have any advice on this? Swap polish or just persist and be more patient?

Also, within the scope of the work covered by that £3500 was to replace the rear suspension which was done with second hand hi-cap springs and DeCarbon dampers. I'll need to do the front end myself before next MoT.

I think it looks awesome. I really like the black wheels with it. You have made your Landie look like a new one so you should be content with the £3.5k. These things can cost such a varied amount but its nice to see you investing in it. Similarly, they guys who spent less have also got a good effect. All good stuff IMHO!

I bought some poorboys Cutting compounds in 3 grades , they recommend you start with the finest and try the coarser grades if that doesn't do it

The lacquer on mine is as hard as nails, it didn't touch it so I've started flatting it with very fine wet&dry to take the surface of the lacquer off before I have another go at it

I'm guessing yours is painted with water based paint, it may not be as tough as 2 pack so I wouldn't start messing with wet&dry, you'll just have to be patient and go slowly

It does look really good though so I wouldn't go mad

As a matter of interest what colour is your vehicle.
It looks very much like mine (the colour that is)
According to the chassis plate my 110 is apparently Alveston Red while the delivery note and invoice state Rioja red.
I've recently been doing some touching up and after a a good deal of trial and error I've found the best match to be Daewoo Ruby Red Pearlescent!!!
I'm also in Notts and would be very interested to know who is doing your refurb. for when the time comes for me to do a similar job.

I think it was Rioja red. However, I did buy it from a dealer in Leicestershire (who will remain nameless) and that is what he told me having just applied the paint job himself. This was 2006. Over the next few months of ownership I discovered a fair few other things with the Landy that weren't quite as he described them so who knows? Rioja red is correct for the era - 1996 300Tdi - while Alveston is a later colour...I think.
The refurb was done by Alldrive Offroad who are in the middle of nowhere between Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Swadlincote. If you read LRO they are always in there doing stuff for John Carroll (one of the writers). They're currently making a 100" Discovery/Series pickup hybrid.
They're good, straight up guys. Not the quickest at turning things round but if you have the patience (which I didin't) to wait while they do their thing then the price/quality ratio is hard to beat. I think the new colour is probably Jaguar Ultimate Metallic Black. They were supposed to be telling me this as well as getting me a bottle of touch up paint but I've not been back to see them since I picked it up in early summer.

I've started to repaint mine, just getting a quick going over for winter (away from tatty/rusty yellow to grey), done by brush/roller. However its cost £42 so far! And about £70 by the time its finished. Halfway there, just gotta do the front now
