Hi do any of you guys know which is the best roof tent to fit to my 110 its for a trip to morocco in 2010 and a 3month trip to africa in 2011 just me and the wife.what are your thoughts on having one with extra room that fits underneath to cover the back of the landy for cooking /showering etc thanks Bob:confused:

best thing would be do a search fella on here. we managed a 6 month trip to mongolia and back this year with a roof rack and a northface mountain tent. ment we could either sleep on the roof or on the ground.

Hi Bob
We returned from a 6 month trip around W Africa earlier this year - spending almost a month in Morocco. I was going to buy a cheap roof tent from e-bay, but my partner insisted we get a decent one. She made the right decision! We bought a 1.4m My Way Evolution for just under a grand, and it is a fantastic piece of kit. I can't compare it to the Howling Moons or Hannibals (except that it weighs half as much - significant for fuel economy & stability) as I've not slept in one, but people who bought cheep Safari Equip ones who we met were less than pleased with the quality. After sleeping in it every night (except for about 14 nights when we got hotel rooms etc) the tent still feels like new!
There are some photos on our blog Sahara and Beyond... and a link to the My Way site.
Good luck and enjoy the trip!

Thanks for that Jonnie i will check out your blog im leaning towards hannibal but wont be buying a cheap ebay type as you say its worth paying for a good one thanks Bob

Hi Bob,
As one of your other replies suggests, you probably don't need a roof tent if you are just going to Morroco.
I have a Hannibal tent with the additional "downstairs" portion under the rear door of my 110 and can't fault it. Somewhere dry like Morroco and the roof section is fine on its own but further into the wetter parts of Africa the downstairs section just gives you somewhere more comfortable to sit instead of the cab.
I think Hannibal,Howling Moon and Eesi-awn are all good quality for a longer trip, its just a matter of keeping your eyes open to get a good deal

LRO will be doing a Rooftop Tent test next year, so that should be interessting to see all the main tents compared side by side ;)

LRO will likely give bias results... an RTT test has already been carried out by the Overland Journal and I can guarantee that it is a more comprehensive/complete test that what LRO will come up with.

Would you happen to know which issue this was - I'd quite like to order a back copy of it.

Ta. :)

Ive seen some for like £600 on ebay, but i would expect it to fall to bits while your trying to fit it. Hannibal make roof tents, never had one, but we have had a hannibal roof rack which was the best quality roof rack ive ever seen, so i would expect their tents are preaty good too. I think the company is south african from what i can remember when we bought the rack.

Yip the Hannibal tents are awesome, nice good quality canvas, but you don't get alot of change from 2k once you have added all the bits and pieces. As far as I know they are only well know brand tents still made in South Africa.

I'm going to chance a 600 squid chinese tent, at least for Morocco and the warm places :D

been there, done that... expect a few sleepless nights

keep an eye on this. If you can get it for £600 you wont regret a hardshell over the copy unless your 7ft tall :D

ROOF TENT ( AUTOHOME ) on eBay (end time 08-Dec-09 21:30:04 GMT)

I know what you are saying makes sense, but I just have an irrational and probably unfounded dislike of the hard top tents :D

The one point I can think of, is I like to sit on the roof rack and take pictures, watch **** go by, and I don't think you can do that on a hard top tent, not if you are as muscular as I am :D
